In 1953, yanmeidong township was built. In 1958, it belonged to Hongguang commune. In 1962, yanmeidong commune was established. In 1984, it was restored to bituminous coal cave township. As of June 2020, yanmeidong township has jurisdiction over six administrative villages including yanmeidong village, suijiazhuang village, jingjiatan village, nanlizhuang village, tu'an village and sandaocheng village, and the Township People's government is stationed in yanmeidong village.
