Zhangdian Town, belonging to Jiangyan District, Taizhou City, Jiangsu Province, is located in the southwest of Jiangyan District, 10 kilometers away from Jiangyan City, 12 kilometers away from Hailing District, 16 kilometers away from Taizhou port, a national first-class open port, 10 kilometers away from Ningqi railway in the north, Ningjing salt Expressway in the East and Ningtong Expressway in the west, with convenient water and land transportation.

With a total area of 93.6 square kilometers (2017), the town governs 26 administrative villages and 76138 people (2017), making it the second most populous town in Jiangyan district.

In December 2019, Zhangdian town was selected as "civilized town of Jiangsu Province in 2016-2018".

Historical evolution

Zhangdian is an ancient market town. In ancient times, it used to be a water meadow and beach. It was inhabited about 4500 years ago. According to legend, Zhang Bo was a clean and honest official in the Eastern Han Dynasty. He devoted himself to water conservancy and farming to benefit the people. Local residents built a memorial temple to commemorate Zhang Bo. In the early Ming Dynasty, Zhang Shicheng, the leader of the Yimin people, once stationed troops here to accumulate grain, which had a great influence on the local area. People transplanted flowers and trees and worshipped the statue of King Zhang (Shicheng) in the ancient Shengyin temple in Diantou, hence the name of Zhang Dian.

According to the relevant modern historical records, General Chang Yuchun led his division to suppress Zhang Shicheng's uprising army in the early Ming Dynasty, which was resisted tenaciously by the rebel army in Suzhou city. After the destruction of the city, the people in the city were burned and killed. As a result, "Hongwu scattered" forced a large number of Suzhou people to move to Zhangdian area. During the revolution of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in the Qing Dynasty, people from southern Jiangsu and southern Anhui came here one after another to avoid "chaos" because of the remote location of Zhangdian. It can be seen that most of the ancestors of Zhangdian people moved in from changmen, Suzhou, and most of them were Wang, Li, Zhang, Chen and Liu.

In July 1940, Zhangtang District Committee was established, and its branch was established in Zhangdian.

In March 1941, with the approval of Tai county Party committee, Zhangdian Central District Party committee was established, with Chen Jiyu as secretary.

In October 1947, Zhangdian District was under the jurisdiction of Taixing.

In May 1949, Zhangdian District was transferred back from Taixing county to Taixian County, and the district office was located in the south of Jinpu bridge in Zhangdian.

In September 1955, agricultural cooperatives were established.

In September 1958, Zhangdian people's commune was established.

In 1983, Zhangdian township was established. In 1988, Zhangdian removed the township and built a town.

In March 2000, with the approval of Jiangyan Municipal People's government, the original Zhangdian Town, Caiguan town and Meiduo Township were merged into the new Zhangdian town. Belonging to Jiangyan City, Taizhou, it is one of the 30 central market towns in Taizhou.
