Yuci District, formerly known as "Weiyu", is located in the Taiyuan Basin in the middle of Shanxi Province. It borders Shouyang County and Heshun County in the East, Qingxu County in the west, Taigu District in the South and Taiyuan City in the northwest. Yuci district is the political, economic and traffic center of Jinzhong City, covering an area of 1328 square kilometers. It is known as the "gateway of provincial capital".
Yuci was called "tushui" and "Weiyu" in the spring and Autumn period, and "Yuci" in the Warring States period. Yuci district was set up in 1948, and Yuci city was set up in 1954. On September 24, 1999, Yuci city was abolished and renamed Yuci District of Jinzhong City. It has jurisdiction over 9 streets, 6 towns and 4 townships, including 127 communities and 272 administrative villages. Rose is the city flower and Sophora japonica is the city tree.
Yuci is one of the top ten comprehensive index counties and cities in Shanxi Province, a national ecological demonstration area, a national cultural advanced area, and a cultural hometown of Shanxi Merchants in China. It has profound cultural heritage, beautiful natural scenery, prosperous science, education and culture, and its economic indicators rank first in the city all the year round. It is the bridgehead and main engine of the 108 comprehensive development corridor and the development of the city's four modernizations.
In March 2019, it was listed as the first batch of revolutionary cultural relics protection and utilization area sub County list.
Evolution of organizational system
Yuci was called "tushui" and "Weiyu" in the spring and Autumn period, and "Yuci" in the Warring States period.
In 979 ad, Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty destroyed the northern Han Dynasty, destroyed the city of Jinyang, ordered the abolishment of Taiyuan Prefecture and the two counties of Taiyuan and Jinyang, set up a new military system of Bingzhou and transferred it to Yuci. In the seventh year of Taiping's rejuvenation of the country (982), Yuci was transferred to Taiyuan new city as a military administration, and Yuci was restored to the county system. After that, the name of the county remained unchanged.
Yuci district was set up in 1948.
In 1954, Chengguan District of Yuci county was changed into Yuci city.
In 1958, Yuci and Shouyang counties were abolished and merged into Yuci city.
Shouyang County was restored in 1960.
In 1963, Yuci city was abolished and Yuci county was restored.
In 1971, Yuci city was restored and Yuci County moved to Changning.
In 1975, Yuci County moved to Yuci city.
On July 28, 1983, the State Council approved to abolish Yuci county and merge the administrative region of Yuci County into Yuci city.
On September 24, 1999, the State Council (Guo Han [1999] No. 124) approved the revocation of Jinzhong Prefecture and county-level Yuci city and the establishment of prefecture level Jinzhong City, with the Municipal People's Government stationed in the newly established Yuci district; Jinzhong City established Yuci District, with the administrative region of the former county-level Yuci city as the administrative region of Yuci District, and the District People's Government stationed in dongshuncheng street.

The terrain in the territory is generally high in the East and low in the west, with an altitude of 768-1814 meters. From the bedrock mountain area in the East, through loess hills, tableland area to plain area, according to the altitude, it can be divided into three types: medium and low earth rock mountain area, loess hills and gullies area and Pingchuan area, accounting for 35.1%, 40.6% and 24.3% of the total area respectively.

The zonal soil is mainly cinnamon soil. It is distributed in the vast area of 790-1800 meters above sea level in the whole region. From high to low, it is mountain leaching cinnamon soil, mountain cinnamon soil, cinnamon soil and light cinnamon soil. The Yuci * alluvial soil is located in the terrace and terrain of Fenhe River and Xiaohe terrace. The elevation is between 760~800 meters. The soil types are all semi water formed soil, light meadow soil, salty pale meadow soil, meadow saline soil and many other soil types.

There are 12 rivers, namely Xiaohe River, tuhe River, Longmen River, geta River, Niugeng River, mama River, Jianhe river, Heihe River, Bailong River, quanzi River, Hekou River and Jinshui River. Xiaohe river is the main tributary of Fenhe River, tuhe river is the first tributary of Xiaohe River, others are seasonal rivers. Xiaohe river has a total length of 137 kilometers and a drainage area of 3720 square kilometers. Xiaohe river is 40 kilometers long in Yuci and flows into Xiaohe river with a runoff area of 467 square kilometers. The annual average runoff is 177 million m3. The total length of Tu river is 43.5 km, the drainage area is 365.8 square kilometers, and the average annual runoff is 17.24 million cubic meters.

The total area of land in Yuci district is 131814.43 hectares, the area of cultivated land is 48518.23 hectares, and the planning index of construction land in Yuci district (2010-2020) is 4250 mu. According to the analysis results of the investigation of cultivated land reserve resources in Yuci District of Jinzhong City, the land reserve resources easy to develop and use in Yuci district are 12165.96 hectares, and the cultivated land reserve resources are 2678.94 hectares.
mineral resources
There are 11 kinds of proven mineral resources in the territory, including coal, refractory clay, brick clay, construction sand and stone, etc.
Coal is distributed in Carboniferous and Permian strata in Beishan area, with burial depth of 45-150m and distribution area of 54.3 square kilometers. There are 8 coal seams, 5 minable coal seams and 9 m total thickness of minable coal seams. The total geological reserves of each coal seam are 717 million tons.
Refractory clay mainly occurs in hekougou, chongyaogou and yukougou in the middle and western part of Beishan area. It occurs in the Carboniferous strata. There are six ore bearing layers and four main mineable layers, distributed in the lower part of Taiyuan formation, with a total thickness of about 25m. According to the industrial classification, the clay is mainly soft semi soft refractory clay. Preliminary investigation shows that the geological reserves are 29.5 million tons.
The main producing areas of construction sand and gravel are xiaoyukou, Mingli, Dongzhao, Guocun, nanheliu and beihougou, which occur in the upper Pleistocene modern alluvial diluvium. It belongs to Heihe River, Jianhe river, Xiaohe River and tuhe river system, in which coarse, medium, fine and gravel are rich in resources.

The annual average total amount of water resources in the territory is 90.43 million cubic meters, including 25.12 million cubic meters of river runoff (surface water resources), 81.68 million cubic meters of groundwater resources, and 16.37 million cubic meters of repeated calculation between river runoff and groundwater. According to the statistics in 2006, the per capita water resources is 162 cubic meters, and the per mu cultivated land is 129 cubic meters.
Animals and plants
There are 892 species of plants in 116 families, including 747 species of wild plants. It has the characteristics of rich plant resources, ancient plant origin and more single species and genera. There are 231 species of terrestrial vertebrates in 27 orders, including 172 species of birds, 42 species of mammals, 12 species of reptiles and 5 species of amphibians.

Yuci is only 10 kilometers away from Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, the largest airport in Shanxi Province. Taiyuan Wusu International Airport is the international airport of Shanxi Province and the alternate airport of Beijing Capital International Airport. It can guarantee the full load take-off and landing of B747, A340, etc. and the alternate landing of the world's largest Airbus A380. There are 21 Airlines joining Taiyuan airport and 12 holding airlines. Taiyuan Wusu International Airport has 46 domestic navigable cities and more than 10 foreign navigable cities, including Frankfurt, Paris, London, New York, San Francisco, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Jeju. Railway
Yuci railway extends in all directions and is the junction hub of Shitai, Tongpu, Taijiao and Taizhongyin Railway trunk lines. Yuci railway station, founded in 1907, is one of the eight stations directly under China Railway Taiyuan Bureau Group Co., Ltd. In 2009, Yuci station delivered 1.317 million passengers, 5.18 million tons of goods and 6952 vehicles per day.
