It was renamed Thanksgiving County in the Sui Dynasty. After liberation, the county was located at dongfangdong of Li nationality, so it was called Dongfang Li Autonomous County. In 1997, the county was withdrawn and set up as a city.

Historical evolution
In the first year of Emperor Wu's reign in the Western Han Dynasty (110 BC), Jiulong County was set up, and the county government was set up in Jiulong Mountain (the seashore on the west side of Xuexue village in Gancheng town), under the jurisdiction of daner county. In 82 BC, daner county was merged into zhuya County, and Jiulong County was changed into zhuya county. In the third year of the Yuan Dynasty of the Western Han Dynasty (46 BC), zhuya county was abandoned and Zhulu county and Jiulong County were set up. Jiulong belonged to Zhulu county and Hepu County. Jiulong was subordinate to zhuya county and belongs to Hepu County. During the period of the Republic of China. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the Prefecture was abolished, and counties were set up all over the island, subordinate to QiongYa road. In 1916, Thanksgiving county government moved to Beili temporarily. In 1918, he moved back to Gancheng and belonged to QiongYa road. On May 1, 1950, Hainan was liberated and the Kuomintang government of Thanksgiving county and the government of Changjiang County were abolished. The people's Government of Changgan County of the Communist Party of China moved from Wangwai village to Beili and was subordinate to Hainan administrative region of Guangdong Province. In April 1952, four districts of Baisha County (Shilu) and five districts of Ledong County (Dongfang) and six districts of Ledong County (Zhongsha) formed Dongfang (small) County, which belongs to Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Region. The county government is located in Dongfang village. In early 1957, Changgan County People's government moved from Beili to Xinjie. In December 1958, Dongfang (small) County, Changgan county and Baisha County were merged into Dongfang County, which is subordinate to Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. The people's Government of the county is located in Chahe. In September 1959, the county people's government moved from Chahe to Basuo. In May 1961, Dongfang County was divided into three counties: Changjiang, Baisha and Dongfang. Dongfang County is subordinate to Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. In December 1987, Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was abolished and Dongfang County was renamed Dongfang Li Autonomous County.
