Historical evolution
In 1732, the capital of Gulao, Xinhua and Zunming and the capital of Shuangqiao in Kaiping were designated from Xinhui. Part of the capital of GuBo was newly established in Heshan county. In November 1958, Heshan county was merged with Gaoming County, which was called Gaohe county. In December 1981, the establishment of Heshan and Gaoming counties was restored. On June 1, 1983, Heshan county was subordinate to Jiangmen City. On November 8, 1993, with the approval of the State Council, it was agreed to abolish Heshan county and establish Heshan City (county-level city).

topographic features
There are Cambrian Bacun group, Devonian, Jurassic, Cretaceous, Eogene and Quaternary strata exposed on the surface of Heshan, among which Bacun group is the most widely distributed. Intrusive rocks are widely distributed in the city, accounting for more than half of the city's area. The geological structure belongs to the central Guangdong depression of South China fold system, including Yapoji anticline, Baishuikeng anticline, Chashan monocline, Da Kunlun monocline and Nashui syncline.
There are Enping xinfengshen fault zone and Xijiang fault zone, among which Enping xinfengshen fault zone runs through the whole city from south to North and is the most important regional fault in the city.
Heshan terrain is wide from east to west, narrow from north to south, with continuous peaks in the middle and rolling hills. The terrain inclines slightly from west to East, low in the East and the lowest in the north. The lowest is Dabu Wai, which is only 1 meter above sea level. Hills are mainly distributed in the northeast, central and south of the city, covering an area of 1003 square kilometers, accounting for 90.5% of the total area of the city. The mountainous area with an altitude of more than 500 meters is 23.3 square kilometers, accounting for 2.1% of the total area of the city. Yapoji, the main peak of Zaomu mountain, is 807.5 meters above sea level, the highest peak in the city. The alluvial plain covers an area of 82 square kilometers, accounting for 7.42% of the city's total area, mainly distributed in Gulao and shaping.
Dayan mountain: it is located in the main traffic road of central Guangdong, 60 kilometers away from Guangzhou, close to Heshan port, next to Guangzhan highway and Fokai highway. Facing the Xijiang River, Dayan mountain is named for its wild goose like shape. It covers a total area of 300 hectares and its main peak is 310 meters above sea level. It is called "sister mountain" with Xiqiao Mountain in the South China Sea. From peak to peak, there are yanshanmen, banshange, shizifeng, yanshanpinghu, riyuefeng, luyouting, Zhuangyuanfang, guirenfeng, etc.
Kunlun Mountain: the peak in the middle of Heshan City. It is 3 kilometers away from Hecheng District in the south. The big peak is called Kunlun Mountain, and the small peak is called lunshan mountain. It is 604 meters above sea level and covers an area of 1866.7 hectares. It is composed of sand shale, purple red sand shale and granite. There are seven urn wells and other places of interest in sanbaokeng mountain stream. There are many natural clumps of pine trees in the mountains. There are about 1267 hectares of forest land, and the vegetation coverage rate is 70%. Local products are stone and hill pit snail. Longkou Hecheng highway passes through the east side of the mountain; there is a simple highway to qiwengjing.
Yunsu mountain: peak in the west of Heshan City. Located in the east of Sihe village, Shuanghe town. The altitude is 637.2 meters. It covers an area of about 48 square kilometers. It faces Zaomu mountain in the East and Laoxiang mountain in Gaoming District in the northwest. The mountain is made of granite. On the top of the mountain, there are huge stone walls like the city, and there are stone Buddha in it. The stone area in front of the Buddha is nearly 10 square meters, just like a chessboard, which is magnificent. In the west, there is Xianren mountain, which has a panoramic view of Kaiping, Enping, Xinhui, Xinxing, Gaoming and yahai. The soil is red soil and red soil. Since 1949, it has been afforested in this area for many years, and Hufang forest farm has been established. In 1968, 2034 hectares of forests were planted by direct seeding with airplanes, with a forest coverage rate of 60%, mainly pine and fir. There are many kinds of birds in the mountain, such as Heron vulture, partridge and hairy eagle, and wild animals, such as yellow mullet, civet and mountain pig.
Chashan: mountains in the northeast of Heshan City. It is divided into neicha mountain and Waicha mountain (neicha mountain is under the jurisdiction of Gaoming District), which is the boundary mountain of Heshan, Gaoming and Nanhai. It is named after Shengchang tea tree. The main peak, with a height of 546 meters above sea level, extends westward to lumeitang in Gaoming District and eastward to shangshiyantou (tuming) on the side of Xijiang River, with a length of 10 kilometers from east to west. It is composed of sand shale. The soil is red soil. It contains limonite, lead ore and silver ore. There are Daoping and other four natural villages and Baishuikeng reservoir on the hillside. The reservoir has been opened up as Xianhe Lake Resort. There are 1067 hectares of pine forest and 134 hectares of tea garden, with a vegetation coverage rate of more than 85%.
Dacheng mountain: Heshan mountain range. In the east of kundong village, Yayao Town, the mountain range covers an area of 268 hectares, with an altitude of 206 meters. It is mainly composed of nine peaks. Dacheng mountain is rich in species, with peach, lotus and Pinus massoniana growing naturally, and Pinus elliottii, Acacia auricula and Acacia mangium planted artificially. Wild animals include black swallow, hairy chicken, tit, etc. There is a spring on the mountain with sweet water. In 1946, Xie Henian, the then county magistrate, nominated "Xiangquan" and erected a monument here. At present, we have built four pavilions from the foot of the mountain to Xiangquan, and gradually built it into a tourist area.

Heshan is close to Xijiang River. There are many rivers in Heshan. The main rivers are Xijiang River, shaping River, Yayao River, Zhaiwu River and Zhishan River, with a total length of 200.8km and a drainage area of 1003.28km2. Except shaping River, which belongs to Xijiang River, the rest belong to Tanjiang River system. The total runoff of the city is 1.017 billion cubic meters (excluding the main stream of Xijiang River).

Eight kinds of mineral resources have been found in Heshan, including iron, lead, zinc, rare earth, phosphorus, pyrite, potash feldspar and decorative stone. It is found that there are a lot of rare earth ore, granite, mineral water, peat soil and a small amount of limonite, zinc ore and gold ore.
