A long history
In Chinese, Pinyin is j ī f ē IX í Gu à n, which means that mistakes have been inherited for a long time and become a habit. It comes from the preface to the general customs.
The source of the idiom is in the preface to "General Customs" by Ying Shao in Han Dynasty: "as for the common language, it should be passed down by all people. It's not a common practice, so we can't observe it."
