He was an official to Zhongshu Shilang and Guanglu Xun. He has many works. He advocates the unity of Buddhism and metaphysics. Zhang Zhan's philosophy of Liezi Zhu has a great influence on later Neo Confucianism of song and Ming Dynasties.

He was an official to Zhongshu Shilang and Guanglu Xun. His works include ten volumes of health preserving essentials, two volumes of Yangxing Zhuan, twelve volumes of Yannian secret record, Zhuangzi's annotation, Wenzi's annotation, Liezi's annotation (Chongxu Zhide Zhenjing's annotation), and Liezi's Yinyi.

According to the preface, when he was young, his grandfather copied strange books in Qi's family. He encountered the rebellion of Yongjia and went south with the books, but lost them on the way. There are only three volumes left in the eight chapters of Liezi. After the relatives and friends home "to participate in school or not, we can get all.". Some people think that Liezi is the compilation of it. In the annotations, he Yan's daolun, mingminglun and Zhuangzi's Xiangxiu's annotations are quoted, which preserve the documents of Wei and Jin Dynasties and reflect his philosophical views.
