Ding Tianxi, a native of Chian (now Rugao, Jiangsu Province), was a diligent scholar and proficient in various schools. The father died early, and the mother was filial.

Ding Tianxi was born in chian of Song Dynasty. His father died early, and he was filial to his mother. One day when he met a bandit, he detained his mother for possession and wanted to kill him. Tianxi defended his mother with his body. The bandit felt his filial piety, and his mother and son were exempted. His mother died in 1067, 90.
