He is a researcher of Institute of zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and chairman of Chinese National Committee of International Union of biological sciences. He graduated from the Department of biology of Fudan University in 1954. After graduation, he engaged in mammalian research in the Institute of zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He organized and participated in the investigation of animal resources in Northeast China and the compilation of local records. When the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China started biodiversity conservation and research in the early 1990s, Wang Song served as the leader of the biodiversity expert working group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the first and second international cooperation committees, and Chinese leader of the Biodiversity Working Group.
