In the 21st year of Daoguang (1841), the order "withdraw troops to save money" was issued. Xiamen withdrew Haixiang Yong. Lin Shumei thought that "the barbarian nature is repeated, please keep the quantity and prepare for the unusual", which was not adopted. In August 1841, dozens of British ships suddenly invaded Xiamen's Lantau Island. The army and the people fought in bloody battles and sank several British fire ships and warships, and the garrison general Jiang Jiyun died. Yan Botao collected the remnant soldiers and retreated to Tong'an. Lin Shumei witnessed this situation in Gaoqi and asked the officials, "where are the Xia people going to depend when you are going to the west?" Soon after, the British army left Xiamen, while Yan Botao claimed to recover the lost land. In Xiaoyun Shichao, there is a seven rhyme "diaoyuyi's death Zhugong" which describes this matter: "the war guards have different opinions and defend the duzhugong for a while. That is to say, we can swallow the enemy with strong Qi, and we believe that sacrifice is loyalty.
