The application of stereotype effect
When we judge others, we often like to regard them as a member of a certain kind of people, and it is easy to think that they have the common characteristics of this kind of people, which is stereotype effect. For example, northerners are often regarded as forthright, bold and upright; southerners are often regarded as smart and flexible; businessmen are often regarded as treacherous, so-called "no treachery, no business"; professors are often regarded as white haired and gentle old people
Stereotype effect has both positive and negative effects in interpersonal communication: the positive effect is that it simplifies our cognitive process, because when we know the characteristics of a certain kind of people, it is easier to infer the characteristics of individuals in this kind of people, although sometimes biased; the negative effect often makes people point to area, stubborn, and make people have the illusion of cognition, such as Racial prejudice, ethnic prejudice, gender prejudice and so on are the products of stereotype effect.
