Huoshaoyu

Huoshaoyu is located under Haicang Bridge in Haicang District, Xiamen City, Fujian Province. It is the largest island in the West Sea area of Xiamen. It is 900 meters long from north to South and 400 meters wide from east to west, with an altitude of 34.7 meters. It falls from the south corner to the north, forming three headlands. From west to East, it looks like the English letter "m". The coastline here is zigzag, the bank slope is steep, the geological structure is peculiar, the rocks are colorful, the sea erosion caves are different, and the beach bay shapes are diverse. Huoshao island lies under the belly of Haicang Bridge. The West Tower of the bridge stands at the north end of the island and controls the center of the West Sea. There are Rabbit Island, Monkey Island, Lantau Island and Gulang island in the south, and Jingtai Island, Maoyu island and Baozhu island in the north.

historical background

Huoshaoyu island was originally named "Diaoyu Island". At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, the farmers of Shitang village in Haicang moved to Diaoyu Island to escape the yuan army and make a living by fishing and farming. Later, the yuan army burned down the houses across the sea and forced the peasants to move back to their original places. From then on, the peasants called it "huoshaoyu". Now, the remains and debris of the houses can be seen in the middle of the island. There are also tombs of the Qing Dynasty on the island. In the 1970s, Xiamen people planted trees here, built lakes around the Bay, raised fish and shrimps, and built dikes and houses. The electric power department built the cross sea EHV tower on the island, and sent special personnel to guard it. A forest villa was specially built for the guardian, which was very quiet!

Landscape features

After 20 years of Closing Hillsides for afforestation and protective development, today's huoshao island is densely covered with acacia, Casuarina equisetifolia and Pinus nigra. Under the trees, Rhododendron, Myrtle, centipede fern and many exotic wild flowers compete. The ground is thickly covered with colorful vegetation, which is almost like virgin forest. The granite road in the forest twists and turns around the whole island. There are two small reservoirs on the island, one is the full moon bay to store fresh water, the other is the Sun Bay to store sea water. The two green waters are embedded in the middle of the island, and the scenery is very charming. The three villas in the forest are surrounded by green hills, green shade, blue sea and blue sky. Egrets, seagulls and goshawks come here from time to time. The scenery is very beautiful.
