On the North Bank of the beautiful Ronghu Lake in Guilin, there is an ancient south gate, built with bricks and stones. It is said that Li Jing, a famous general of Tang Dynasty, built Chengshou in Guilin after he pacified Lingnan in 621, which is the South Gate of "Tang city" in Guilin. It is more than 1300 years ago.

According to yitongzhi of the Ming Dynasty, "the gate of banyan trees is the ancient south gate. It is said that a banyan tree was planted in the gate of the Tang Dynasty, and its roots straddled the gate for a long time "The so-called banyan gate is the South Gate of the ancient city of the Tang and Song Dynasties," says Yu De of the Ming and Zhou dynasties

At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, this gate was Weide gate of Guilin city. In the eighth year of Hongwu (1375) of Ming Dynasty, the city of Guilin expanded to the south. All the old foundations were destroyed, and only this gate existed. During the reign of Yuan Dynasty, the temple of Yu was built on the gate of the city to worship Hou Guanyu, the hall of longevity in Han Dynasty. During the reign of Zhengde in Ming Dynasty, Zhang Yue changed his title to yinglou, and in the early years of Jiajing, he changed his name to yanggaolou. The old buildings were destroyed during the Anti Japanese war. The existing building is built after the Anti Japanese War: single eaves Xieshan, brick and wood structure, covering an area of 130 square meters. The stone carved railings around are of Ming Dynasty.

In 1963, Guo Moruo once went to the gate building, wrote the word "ancient South Gate" and engraved the door head.
