The monument was built in April 1979. After the victory of the Huaihai Campaign in 1949, the people's Liberation Army went south. In April of the same year, it crossed the Yangtze River and liberated Nanjing on April 23. In order to commemorate this great historical achievement and the revolutionary martyrs who died in the battle of crossing the Yangtze River, the Nanjing Municipal People's government prepared to build a monument to the victory of crossing the Yangtze River in 1959 and erected a foundation stone at the Rehe road square in Xiaguan. On April 23, 1979, the crossing victory monument was officially completed. The monument to the victory of crossing the Yangtze River is in the shape of a double sailing boat. The base of the monument is a purple boat. A copper commemorative medallion of crossing the Yangtze River with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a weight of about 400 kg is suspended in the middle of the white double sailing boats.
