Mupo township is located in the middle reaches of Fubian River to the north of the county. It is the only way for the Red Army to reach Lianghekou during the long march. The township government is 107 km away from malkang in the north and 36 km away from Xiaojin in the West.

It has jurisdiction over 8 administrative villages (mupo, dengchun, Qingchun, Kangle, Damu, Daliang, zhaoniu, Mulong) and 26 villager groups. Among them, Kangle village is a pure animal husbandry village with a population of 3520 (2017), belonging to a Tibetan inhabited area.
