Jiangnan Naval Academy site

Jiangnan Naval Academy is also called Nanyang Naval Academy and Jiangning Naval Academy. Guangxu 16 years (1890) opened on November 16, the school site in Nanjing Xiaguan Yifeng gate, covering an area of 45 mu. It mainly provides talents for Nanyang Navy.

The school has one general manager, more than ten staff members for promotion, supervision and copywriting, more than ten Chinese and foreign teachers, and more than 60 workers for affiliated factories, bands and miscellaneous workers. The school system refers to the Tianjin Naval Academy, which is divided into two subjects: driving and management. Each subject is divided into first, second and third classes, with one teacher assigned to each class. The course is divided into two classes, one is ship class. After entering class three, the students specialized in English and other basic knowledge, and only after entering the first class did they learn professional knowledge, including astronomy, Haidao, Yufeng, array, building, steam turbine, mine performance, etc. Students must also learn some traditional Chinese military classics, such as Zuozhuan, ZhanGuoCe, Sunzi's art of war, and a brief introduction to history reading, so as to accumulate military strategic thoughts. There are six Chinese teachers in the school, who teach students regularly.

Jiangnan Naval Academy is a latecomer than Fuzhou Naval Academy and Tianjin Naval Academy, but its management is quite active. Graduates are sent to study in Japan or to practice in British warships, bringing up a lot of talents. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Jiangnan Naval Academy had graduated 107 drivers, 91 managers and 13 torpedoes. Famous graduates include: Lin Jianzhang, Du Xigui, Chen Jiliang, Chen Shaokuan, Zhao Sheng, etc. In addition, Zhou Shuren (Lu Xun) and Zhou Zuoren brothers also studied in Jiangnan Naval Academy. Lu Xun was in charge of the school in 1898, but the Jiangnan Naval Academy was already corrupt and dilapidated.
