Ancient Bell Museum of Dazhong Temple

The Ancient Bell Museum of Dazhongsi is located in Dazhongsi, a famous temple in Beijing. Dazhong temple, formerly known as juesheng temple, was built in 1733 A.D. with a total area of 30000 square meters. The temple has a rigorous layout and magnificent momentum. It was once an important place for the royal family to pray for rain and hold Buddhist activities. The temple is also known as the "Big Bell Temple" for its collection of a huge Buddha clock cast during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty.

In 1957, the Beijing municipal government declared juesheng Temple an important cultural relic protection unit at the municipal level. In December 1996, juesheng temple was announced by the State Council as a national key cultural relics protection unit. In February 1980, the Dazhong temple cultural relics preservation office was established. On October 5, 1985, the Ancient Bell Museum of Dazhongsi was established and opened to the outside world. Today, Dazhongsi has become a multi-functional museum that uses ancient buildings to carry out tourism collection, exhibition research, development and utilization of ancient bell cultural resources.

Historical evolution

In the first month of 1733 ad, Emperor Yongzheng built juesheng temple.

In the winter of 1734 ad, juesheng temple was built.

In 1743, the great bell of Yongle was moved to juesheng temple, and its hanging and construction were completed.

From the eighth year of Qianlong to the end of Qing Dynasty, juesheng Temple became a religious place for the royal family to pray for rain and heaven.

During the period of the Republic of China, juesheng Temple gradually entered the civilian period from the Royal place of praying for rain, and became one of the major temple fairs in the capital.

In 1957, the Beijing municipal government declared juesheng temple a municipal cultural relic protection unit.

On March 11, 1980, the Beijing Municipal People's Government approved the establishment of the Dazhongsi cultural relics depository.

On October 12, 1980, the exhibition of Dazhong temple was officially opened to the public.

On October 4, 1985, the Ancient Bell Museum of Dazhongsi was established.

On March 30, 1986, the opening ceremony of the South Gate of the Ancient Bell Museum of Dazhong temple was held.

On October 7, 1986, Dazhong temple was elected as one of the 16 scenic spots in New Beijing.

On March 19, 1990, Beijing Municipal Bureau of cultural relics held an office meeting to discuss the renovation plan of Dazhongsi East Road. The meeting established the decision to build and rebuild the temple on the original pattern.

On December 27, 1996, Dazhong temple was announced by the State Council as the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

In February 2000, the power capacity expansion and reconstruction project of the Ancient Bell Museum of Dazhongsi was started.

On July 5, 2000, the lightning protection project of the Ancient Bell Museum of Dazhongsi was started.

Basic Display

There are some basic exhibitions, such as the exhibition of the historical evolution of the Great Bell Temple, the exhibition of the brief history of ancient bells, the exhibition of the casting technology of bells, and the exhibition of the inscription of the king of bells. There are also chime bells, Buddha bells and dragon washes for the audience to knock and entertain. The museum publishes a series of ancient bell culture.

Organization

Office: responsible for the administration, finance, personnel and logistics management of the museum, contacting the functional departments of the government, coordinating the work among the departments (sections) of the unit, ensuring that the leaders of the museum have access to the instructions of the lower level and the work of the unit is carried out in an orderly manner.

The Ministry of social education is responsible for the reception and explanation of visitors to the museum, as well as the external liaison, publicity and temporary exhibition of the museum, carrying out patriotic education base activities, and maintaining and updating the website of the museum.

Business department: responsible for the collection, storage, research and exhibition of the museum's cultural relics, carrying out foreign cultural exchange activities, publishing academic works and atlas.

Security section: responsible for the management of public security and order, safety prevention, publicity and education, safety supervision, safety inspection, etc. in the museum, implement the safety work assigned by the Municipal Bureau of cultural relics, and coordinate with the public security and fire departments to prevent all kinds of accidents.

Business management department: responsible for the museum's arts and crafts business department, sales of featured small bell crafts, museum publications, and undertake the design and casting of all kinds of clocks.

 

Exhibitions and collections

Gold plated bronze bell

The gold-plated bronze bell, cast in the Chenghua period of Ming Dynasty (1465-1487), is 45.9 cm in height and 31.4 cm in diameter. The whole clock is divided into six parts from top to bottom, and each part is decorated with different gilding patterns. The order is: 1. Square fold pattern; 2. Cloud thunder land Taotie pattern; 3. Brocade pattern on the bottom, decorated with entwined lotus; 4. Kaiguang pattern with seal script on the inside, decorated with lotus; 5. Cloud thunder pattern on the ground, decorated with deformed dragon pattern; 6. Cloud dragon pearl pattern.

Hongzhi daozhong

It was cast in 1492, with a height of 124.5 cm, a diameter of 89.5 cm and a weight of 514 kg. The bell button is the button of Jiaolong Pulao, and the Dragon bodies are intertwined with each other. The bell shoulder is decorated with 28 lotus petals, and 28 stars are cast in the lotus petals. There is no division in the clock body, which is full of characters. There is a lotus tablet at the waist of the bell, with the inscription of "Ming Hongzhi Renzi midsummer auspicious day system". The characters of the bell body are all arranged horizontally, and the northern Zhenwu Sutra is cast at the beginning. The lower part of the bell is evenly distributed with Eight Trigram symbols, and the bell skirt is full of Taoist symbols.

Thirty five Buddhist bells

Thirty five Buddhist bells, cast in 1512, are 105.3 cm high, 68 cm in diameter and 188 kg in weight. Bronze. The bell button is a double head button. The bell shoulder is decorated with 16 lotus petals. The upper part of the bell is inscribed with 35 Buddha names. The name of the eunuch who donated money to cast the bell is inscribed in the lower part. The bell skirt is full of waves and four bell months.

Cloud copper bell

Yunwen copper bell, cast in 1513, is 118.7 cm high, 72.2 cm in diameter and 212 kg in weight. Each division of the bell body is covered with relief like cloud patterns, and the middle is the word "Wang" composed of cloud patterns. The moon and clock are decorated with reliefs of clouds, dragons and waves.

Wanshan Temple bronze bell

Wanshan Temple bronze bell, cast in the 41st year of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty (1702), is 110 cm in height, 78.7 cm in diameter and 228 kg in weight. There is a sutra of Amitabha on the body of the bell. In the middle of the Sutra, there are also some exquisite small figures, such as the pattern of Pan Bi, yin yang fish, censer, vase, the symbol of Bi, double fish, little dragon, cloud head and so on.
