[plant morphology] Tradescantia

Annual herb, 20-50 cm high. The stem is much branched, fleshy, purplish red, the lower part is creeping, the nodes often have fibrous roots, and the upper part is nearly erect. Leaves alternate, lanceolate, 6-13 cm long, 6-10 mm wide, apex acuminate, entire, base embracing stem into sheath, sheath mouth with long white eyelashes, dark green above, green purple edge, purplish red below. Flowers densely on a bifurcate peduncle, with linear lanceolate bracts below, ca. 7 cm long; sepals 3, green, ovoid, persistent; petals 3, blue purple, broadly ovate; stamens 6, 2 hairy, 3 degenerate, and 1 filament short and slender, without anther; pistils 1, ovary ovate, 3-locular, style filiform and long, stigma capitate. The capsule is elliptic with 3 ridges. The seeds are triangular, semicircular and dark brown. It blooms in summer and autumn.
