Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge

--The Sino Korean friendship bridge is the first railway bridge built on the Yalu River. The border bridge across China and North Korea is a historical monument.

Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge

The Sino Korean friendship bridge, which started construction in April 1937 and was completed in May 1943, has a total length of 940.8 meters, of which the Chinese Bridge is 569.9 meters long. In October 1990, according to the agreement between the two countries, the Yalu River Bridge was renamed "Sino Korean friendship bridge".

In November 2017, due to the DPRK's need to repair the bridge deck, the Sino DPRK friendship bridge will be temporarily closed for maintenance.

Construction history

Xiaqiao

Xiaqiao is the first railway bridge built on the Yalu River in May 1909 (the first year of Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty), when the Railway Bureau of the then Japanese governor's office in Korea changed the temporary light narrow gauge Military Railway on the Anfeng line (Dandong Shenyang) into a permanent commercial railway. The whole project, which employed 510000 workers from China and Korea, was completed in October 1911 (the third year of Xuantong). The bridge is 941.83 meters long, 11 meters wide, and 12 holes. It is a curved string steel beam with No. 9 pier as the axis. It is opened regularly every day for passing large ships. After the completion of the bridge, the Anfeng line is connected with the Korean railway, forming a half bridge running through northeast China and Korea A transportation line on the island.

After the completion of the bridge in 1943, it was changed into a highway bridge with a large driveway in the middle and sidewalks on both sides. On the left is the passage to North Korea, and on the right is the passage to China.

On the bridge

In April 1937 (26 years of the Republic of China), when the Japanese aggressors built the Anfeng double track railway, the upper bridge was designed and built by the then Japanese Automobile Co., Ltd. and Japan Construction Co., Ltd. 100 meters upstream of the lower bridge according to the frequency of 300 years. It was opened to traffic in April 1943. The bridge is 946 meters long and has 12 holes. The six holes on the North Korean side are flat string continuous bridges, while the six holes on the Chinese side are suspension string continuous bridge type double track railway bridges, which can run up and down a pair of trains at the same time. After the bridge was opened to traffic, it became the main channel for Japanese invaders to plunder Chinese resources. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the bridge was taken over by the then Soviet Red Army.

In June 1947, when the Soviet troops left Korea, they handed over the river bridge to the two governments for joint management. On the bridge in January 1951, the double track railway was removed and replaced by a highway, which became a dual-purpose railway highway bridge.

Shut down maintenance

In November 2017, due to the DPRK's need to repair the bridge deck, the Sino DPRK friendship bridge will be temporarily closed for maintenance. After the maintenance work, the bridge will resume normal traffic

Historical witness

After the war of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, Yalu River Bridge, together with other bridges, undertook the tasks of supplying military supplies and supporting the front-line transportation in the rear. Most of the first volunteers went to the front line from here. During the war, a large number of combat materials, weapons and equipment were also transported to Korea through the Yalu River Bridge. In October 1950, in order to cut off the military and material support of our volunteers, the U.S. military mobilized most of its air forces and began to blockade the railways, highways and bridges on the Yalu River, which are important communication routes between China and North Korea. He claimed to "destroy all international bridges at the North Korean end of the Manchuria border with the greatest strength" and "all means of transportation, military facilities, factories, cities and villages" in the east of the Yalu River. From November 8 to 21, the US military dispatched more than 600 bombers to carpet bomb all bridges on the Yalu River and villages, military facilities and traffic arteries in Northern Korea. In an instant, the northern part of North Korea turned into ruins and there was a sea of fire along the Yalu River. The Yalu River lower bridge was also broken by the explosion, and all the 8-hole bridges on the North Korean side sank into the river, and the lower bridge was completely paralyzed. The rail on the side facing the bridge was blasted, the bridge shifted and the bridge deck caught fire. Antong Railway Bureau organized more than 200 people to rush onto the river bridge, built temporary piers with sandbags full of sand and stones, built sleeper bridge piers on them, supported the damaged bottom beam, and repaired the bridge. In the baptism of the war, although it left countless bullet holes on its body, it still stands on the Yalu River. The steel transportation line, which is known as "indestructible and indestructible", has become a monument to the victory of the Chinese and Korean people in jointly fighting against the aggressors and defending their country, and a rainbow of friendship between the Chinese and Korean people.

After the victory of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, the DPRK side demolished the wreckage of the six hole iron bridge under the bridge. The remnant bridge, which belongs to the Chinese side, has been completely preserved with bullet marks. It is no coincidence that the Chinese side of the bridge can be preserved, but it has a profound historical background. During the Korean War, MacArthur, the commander-in-chief of the US Army invading North Korea, was a famous "ever victorious general" of the United States. At the beginning of the war, he was dazzled by the temporary victory, did not pay attention to China and North Korea, and arrogantly wanted to push the front to the Yalu River before "thanksgiving". The U.S. government has noticed the repeated protests and serious warnings of the Chinese government, and is worried that if it continues to air raid China, it will force China to get involved in the war. Therefore, when the US Air Force bombed the Yalu River Bridge, it had to strictly grasp the boundary between China and North Korea, bombing only the North Korean side, not the Chinese side. The existence of the "broken bridge" of the Yalu River vividly shows the pivotal position of new China in the world.

 

Protection status

On October 17, 1988, the people's Government of Dandong listed the broken bridge as a municipal cultural relic protection unit;

On October 25, 1990, the Chinese and DPRK governments agreed to name Shangqiao "China DPRK friendship bridge" (one end of the DPRK side is "DPRK China Friendship Bridge"), in order to commemorate the fighting friendship formed by the lives and blood of the Chinese and DPRK people;

In October 2000, Chi Haotian, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and Minister of national defense, inscribed "Yalu River Bridge broken" for Xiaqiao in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the volunteer army's war to resist US aggression and aid Korea;

On the eve of the 80th anniversary of the birth of the Communist Party of China in 2001, the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee named the Yalu River Bridge as the "national patriotic education base".

In June 2006, the bridge was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit.
