Located in Shiliping village, Zhudong Township, Pan County, Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province, the Dadong ancient cultural site is 49 kilometers away from the county seat.

The cave where the site is located was originally called shilidadong, which developed in the thick limestone mountain on the western edge of Ligu, shilipingpo. It is composed of guanniu cave, Shuidong cave, Yinhe cave, main cave hall and Xiaodong cave. There are shafts and scarps between the caves. The vertical height difference between the upper cave and the lowest cave is 115 meters, and the total length of the cave system is 1660 meters. Historical evolution

In 1990, Dadong was discovered in Panxian county.

From 1992 to 1996, the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liupanshui Municipal Institute of cultural administration and Guizhou Normal University jointly organized a team to excavate the site for three times. Archaeologists from the University of Cincinnati and the University of California at Stanislaus participated in the excavation in 1996.

From 1998 to 2000, the Panxian Dadong workstation, composed of archaeologists from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and paleoanthropology and archaeologists from Liupanshui City, was excavated jointly with the above two universities in the United States.

In 1991, the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences sent people to investigate. On November 20, 1996, the Dadong site was listed as a "national treasure" in the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units announced by the State Council.

Layout structure

The entrance of Dadong is closely connected with the main hall, where the site is located. The entrance is 85 degrees northeast, 55 meters wide, 220 meters deep and 30 meters high. The main cave hall is a straight tunnel, which is flat and dry, 240 meters long, 30 meters high and 30 meters wide respectively. The deposits rich in information about ancient human activities gently incline from the entrance to the hall, with an area of 9900 square meters and an outcrop thickness of 19.5 meters.

The surface of the deposit at the entrance is 1674 meters above sea level. On it, there is a wooden structure building with a 5-room width and a big beam inscribed as rebuilt in the sixth year of the Republic of China (2 in the North). Now it lives in a farmer surnamed Zhao. In front of the wooden house, there are two shihengjiang openings built in the sixth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty. There is a slope in front of the entrance of the cave, facing Shiliping slope valley. The average sea level of the slope Valley is about 1640 meters, flat and open, with a total area of about 2 square kilometers.

Cultural relics

Stone products include stone core, stone slice, stone leaf and tools. In April 1992, an area of 12 square meters was excavated. More than 700 pieces of earth and stone products and more than 500 fossil specimens were unearthed, including one human tooth fossil, dozens of mammals and a small number of birds and fish.

In 1993, a formal excavation was carried out in Dadong, Panxian county. Four ancient teeth like fossils, more than 2000 stone tools, nearly 10000 animal fossils, and a number of ashes, ashes, burnt bones and other relics of ancient human civilization were obtained.

From 1998 to 2000, the site was excavated three times and cleaned up six times, covering an area of 86 square meters. A total of 5 human tooth fossils, more than 3000 stone artifacts, tens of thousands of fossil specimens containing 43 species of mammals, as well as a large number of burnt bones and charcoal chips were obtained.

Research results

Due to the huge thickness, rich connotation, multi-disciplinary and high-level research results of the deposits of ancient human activities in Dadong, Panxian County, the site was rated as one of the top ten new archaeological discoveries in China in 1993. On November 20, 1996, it was listed in the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units

It has become one of the most important Paleolithic sites in the world.

According to paleontology, its geological age is "late Pleistocene", during which human beings belong to "early Homo sapiens", and human intelligence has developed. A large number of animal fossils tell us that hunting was quite prosperous in this period, and the scope of catching animals was very wide, and it was able to catch large animals, beasts, birds in the sky and fish in the water.
