Danzhou ancient city, located in Sanjiang County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, started construction on April 20, the 19th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1591 A.D.) and was completed on April 14, 1592. The city is nearly square, with a circumference of 293 Zhang. The wall stack is one Zhang and six feet high, and the wall is one Zhang and two feet thick. Besides the stack, there is a channel on the top of the wall, nine feet wide. The wall is a standard brick building of the Ming Dynasty.

There are four gates in the city, Southeast and northwest. In history, the east gate is the Red Gate, which is the channel for officials and important celebrations; the west gate is the beheading gate, from which criminals were executed by the county government in the old days. The south gate is the caimen gate, from which young people are happy to get in and out for weddings; the north gate is the funeral gate, from which coffins are carried out. The four city gate buildings are named: dongjiuri building, nanxunfeng building, xitaibai building and beibeidi building. At the beginning of 1976, the south-west gate was demolished due to the cultural revolution. The east gate was demolished in 1958, rebuilt and restored by Danzhou villagers in 2006, and the north gate was rebuilt by all villagers in 2004.

So far, there is no bridge connecting Danzhou ancient city to the other bank. The local government had intended to build the bridge, but it was unanimously opposed by the residents. The reason is that "once there is a bridge, there will be no Danzhou". If the bridge is built, the only ancient city on water in China will no longer exist. As a result, tourists have to ferry into Danzhou ancient city. Danzhou ancient ferry is set up on the Rongjiang river at the junction of Sanjiang County and Rong'an county. It has a history of more than 500 years from the original standard wooden board to the present motor boat. It has played a great economic role in Danzhou and other places for hundreds of years. At the same time, it has also provided transportation convenience for people living on Danzhou island for generations. Danzhou ancient ferry is also the only way for tourists to enter the ancient city.
