Longevity rock

Wanshouyan site is located in the northwest of Yanqian village, Yanqian Town, Sanyuan District, Sanming City, Fujian Province. Wanshouyan site, commonly known as Wanshouyan ancient human site, is the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

In July 2020, Sanming Wanshouyan cultural tourism town was approved as a national 4A scenic spot.

Historical evolution

Nearly 100 pieces of stone artifacts were found in the Wanshouyan site, including stone cores, stone chips, choppers and scrapers, as well as bone shovels, bone cones and horn ornaments, and a variety of mammal fossils.

The age is about 200000 years ago. It is an early Paleolithic cultural site. In addition, a rare site of early artificial stone pavement in the world has been discovered. The exposed area of stone pavement is about 120 square meters, and more than 400 fossils of associated animals such as rhinoceros, tiger, brown bear and cattle have been found.

Wanshouyan Paleolithic cultural site national key cultural relics protection unit is located in the northeast of Yanqian Town, Sanming City. It takes about ten minutes to drive to the foot of the mountain. The rock is composed of limestone, with karst development, forming more than ten caves.

The Paleolithic culture is buried in Lingfeng cave and chuanfan cave. The total area of the site is more than 1200 square meters, and the excavation area is 400 square meters. The artificial stone paved floor about 20000 years ago found in the lower cultural layer of chuanfan cave is the first in China and rare in the world. More than 800 pieces of stone products, a small amount of bone and horn implements and more than 20 species of animal fossils were unearthed, with the age of 180000 years and 10000-30000 years respectively. Wanshouyan Paleolithic cultural site was discovered in the autumn of 1999.

Cultural relics protection

There are not only ancient human activity sites, but also rich historical, cultural and natural karst landscapes in Wanshouyan. The site has been listed as one of the eight scenic spots in Sanyuan forest park.

In 2001, it was listed as a national cultural relic protection unit. The discovery of Wanshouyan Paleolithic site has advanced the history of ancient human life in Fujian by more than 100000 years, filling a gap in the archaeological age of Fujian Province. It is also the earliest cave type of early Paleolithic cultural site found in East China so far.

Sanyuan cave

Wanshouyan in Sanyuan District is located on the solitary peak of limestone in the northwest of Yanqian village, Yanqian Town, Sanyuan District. It is composed of limestone and has developed into more than ten caves. In the autumn of 1999, a Paleolithic cultural site was discovered in the Wanshouyan cave, which is buried in Lingfeng cave and chuanfan cave. The total area of the site is more than 1200 square meters, and the excavation area is 400 square meters. The lower cultural layer of chuanfan cave has an artificial stone floor about 20000 years ago, which is the first discovery in China and rare in the world.

More than 800 pieces of stone artifacts, a small amount of bone and horn implements and more than 20 species of animal fossils were unearthed, dating 180000 years ago and 10000-30000 years ago respectively. The discovery of the site has advanced the history of ancient human life in Fujian by more than 100000 years, filling a gap in the archaeological age of Fujian Province. It is also the earliest cave type early Paleolithic cultural site in East China.

archaeological discovery

In 2000, the Wanshouyan site was rated as the top ten archaeological discoveries in China. In June 2001, it was listed as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
