In 1896, the Japanese government forced the Qing government to allow it to set up a consulate in Xiamen. The site was located at No. 26, Lujiao Road, which is close to the British Consulate. The building was designed by Chinese designers, but the building is British style and the roof is Chinese style. It was built in 1897.
In 1928, Japan set up two red buildings on the side of the consulate as its police headquarters. During the Anti Japanese War, many anti Japanese volunteers were held in the basement prison here. Up to now, the Anti Japanese slogans and bloodstains left by the Anti Japanese volunteers can still be seen on the walls. After the victory of the Anti Japanese war in 1945, the national government nationalized it, and later it was all owned by Xiamen University. At present, it is the staff dormitory of Xiamen University, but it is in serious dilapidation.
