The shape of the building is composed of four pyramidal roof vertices, which gives the building a growing intention. The outer surface material is made of cotton steel plate, which has the color of clay and is durable. One of the volumes forms a new public square. The 32000 square meter central square is slightly sunken to coordinate with the surrounding buildings. Visitors enter the museum through a sunken stepped sculpture park. On the first floor, there is a huge exhibition hall with a 37 meter high atrium. The 80 meter clear span provides a central area for the museum to display large-scale installations and exhibits. The skylight on the high roof introduces north and northwest skylight to the exhibition hall, creating an excellent natural lighting environment for the artwork.

The surrounding exhibition space is equipped with the most advanced indoor climate control system. Artificial lighting is installed on the ceiling track. Because 70% of the structures in the building are supported by four huge roofs, the building has good thermal insulation effect, and only 10% of the glass windows are needed, reducing the necessary maintenance. Datong art museum is expected to open to the public in 2013. It will also participate in the "beyond the building" unit of the basic art international tour on behalf of China.
