Yuelao Temple

Yuelao temple, also known as "Yuelao Palace", is located in the southwest of Shangqiu ancient city, Suiyang District, Shangqiu City, Henan Province. It was built in the Tang Dynasty to worship the old man under the moon who was in charge of marriage in the world. "Xuxuanguailu · betrothal shop" in the Tang Dynasty is the earliest document to record the old man under the moon. It records that the old man under the moon lived in Songzhou and Songcheng in the Tang Dynasty

Historical evolution

In the second year of Yuanhe in the Tang Dynasty (807 AD), a scholar named Wei Gu passed by Songcheng in Songzhou (now Shangqiu ancient city in Henan Province) and stayed in the inn of Nandian in Songcheng. At night, he met an old man and searched a marriage book in the moonlight. The old man under the moon pointed out the marriage object for Wei Gu by pulling the red rope. Later, Wei Gu married Wang Tai's daughter, the governor of Xiangzhou, according to the old man's words.

When the magistrate of Songcheng County knew this, he named the hotel where Wei Gu lived "engagement Hotel". Because this allusion happened in Nandian of song city (now Shangqiu ancient city), Li Fuyan, a literary scientist of Tang Dynasty, named it "engagement shop" and included it in xuxuangualu (formerly xuyougualu). It has been handed down from generation to generation and is well known by men, women and children.

There is a sitting statue of an old man with white hair and silver beard in Yuelao temple. He is kind-hearted and smiling. He holds a marriage book in one hand and a red rope in the other. There is a couplet in the temple door: "may there be lovers in the world and they all become dependents; it is predestined that we should never miss marriage."

The 154 volume of the unified annals of the Qing Dynasty goes back to Defu: "the engagement shop, the unified annals of the Ming Dynasty, is in the old city of Defu. Tang Wei meets Yuelao at the place where he marries."
