Shilin Temple

Shilin temple was built in 1573, the first year of Wanli. It was built by a useless monk to build a temple. After maintenance and expansion in Kangxi, Qianlong and Xianfeng years of the Qing Dynasty, it had more than 100 monks by the end of the Qing Dynasty. It became one of the four famous temples in eastern Guangdong (as famous as Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou, Lingguang temple in Yinnashan of Meizhou and Lianhua temple in Lianhua Mountain). By the 1940s, the Shilin temple had been obliterated. It was reopened and restored in 1995. Now it has formed a certain scale.

Historical legend

Since ancient times, it has been said that "most of the famous mountain monks in the world" and "if the mountain is not high, the monks (immortals) are famous",

According to legend, Shilin temple was created by the founder of "Ruyu" in Hetou Town, Pingyuan county. For example, grandmaster Yu, who was surnamed Liu in his common life, had five sons and was rich in his family. When the sons grew up, they were separated from each other and had their own families. Their grandparents were widowed and lived alone. One new year's Eve, the grandmaster thought, new year's Eve, do not have to cook their own fire, the sons will come to ask his father to eat new year's Eve dinner. But as a result, none of his sons asked him to eat. At eight or nine o'clock in the evening, when several grandsons came to ask their grandmaster for a red envelope, they asked:

"Grandfather, have you eaten yet?" The grandmaster said, "who hasn't eaten yet? Even the dog ate it. Then he took a huge sum of money to the foot of Wuzhishi mountain to be a monk and build Shilin temple. The patriarch thought that his many sons and money were useless, so he changed his name to "useless" and called it useless Zen master. Because of the time and customs, he was unable to practice Tao and respect virtue. If he was stupid and stubborn, he took the name "such as stupid". The founder was over 50 years old when he built the temple.

present situation

At present, the temple has the name of "3000 Jin", that is, the statue of Buddha, the big bell and the censer tripod made of pig iron each weigh 1000 Jin. The gate of the original temple is:

In order to promote Buddhism, guide people to good, and purify the social environment, abbot Shi Ruiji of Lingguang temple in Meizhou City in the 1980s, invited by leaders of Pingyuan county and local community leaders, spared no effort to rebuild Shilin temple. With the help of Wen Yuzhu and people from all walks of life in Meixian District of Meizhou City, the temple was initially built. A grand opening ceremony was held on December 15, 2003. Now Shilin temple is planned to be built into Fujian It's the largest jungle dojo in Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces.
