Ancient tomb of Muslim sages

synonym

Generally speaking, the tomb of the Muslim sages refers to the ancient tomb of the Muslim sages

The ancient tomb of Muslim sages is located in guihuagang, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. According to legend, said Abby wanges, a famous Arab Islamic missionary in the Tang Dynasty, was buried here after he returned to Guangzhou.

In 2013, the State Council announced it as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

The origin of location

The ancient tomb of Muslim sages is located in the west of Lanpu, Jiefang North Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou city. Since the Yuan Dynasty, Muslims in China have been called "Huihui", so it is also called Huihui grave. Chinese scholars in the Ming and Qing Dynasties called the Islamic doctrine "to the pure and to the true", so Islam is also called "the Muslim religion", and its tomb geography is naturally called the ancient tomb of the Muslim sages. The ancient tomb of the Muslim sages is the tomb of more than 40 famous Arab Islamic missionaries headed by said Abby wangesu. It is said that in the early years of Tang Zhenguan, Wan gesu went to Guangzhou to preach and built a mosque for overseas Chinese to worship. After his return to the truth, the believers camped and buried him here. The tomb was built in 629, the third year of Zhenguan. It has been more than 1300 years. It is a well-known ancient tomb.

Structural features

It is said that after his death in Guangzhou, Abu Wan gesu, a famous early Islamic missionary, was buried here for his followers. It is a famous Islamic historic site in Guangzhou. On the forehead of muyuan gate was written "ancient tomb of the Muslim sages". The garden is a courtyard style building with a wide range of flowers and trees. There are three halls in the west, the open hall in front and the worship hall in the north. The vault of the tomb is shaped like a hanging bell, and the inside of the tomb is shaped like a hole. When people chant or speak in it, there is corresponding echo, so it is commonly known as "Xiangfen". The tomb was built in 629, the third year of Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty. It seems that it is not credible. Based on the historical research of the establishment and spread of Islam and its friendly exchanges with China, at that time, Muhammad, the founder of Islam, was busy with the war in the Arabian Peninsula, in order to establish Islam and establish a political and religious regime, it was impossible for Islamists to preach in China. But the burial time of the tomb will not be too late, because from the structure of the existing halls and other buildings in the cemetery, it is the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty. The ancient tomb is a garden style cemetery, surrounded by walls, with worship halls, square pavilions and wing rooms. You can walk into the ancient tombs of the sages by passing through a famous building with "high wind and Yang Zhi". Along a stone road with stone railings on both sides, you can walk into the ancient tombs of the sages. The tomb is hollow and round, shaped like a hanging bell, in which the tombs of the sages are located. Because the tomb is arched, believers or visitors here pay homage to the sages, recite scriptures, pray or speak, the voice is particularly loud and reverberate, so this tomb is also known as "Xiangfen". The existing halls and other buildings in the cemetery are of Ming Dynasty style.

Memorial archway

The memorial archway is located in the north of the ancient tomb of the Muslim sages on Jiefang North Road. It was built in memory of the sun family, the wife of CAI Jinzhang, the former land governor. Built in the 25th year of Guangxu reign (1899), it is made of granite and has three rooms and four pillars. The width of the Ming room is 2.3 meters and that of the second room is 0.95 meters. The couplets and characters of the front and back pillars are the same. In the Ming room, the plaque of "imperial edict" is erected on the forehead, the inscription of "chastity and fragrance" is engraved on the upper forehead, the inscription of "iron nature" and "ice heart" is engraved on the second room, and the inscription of "Huangqing JingBiao" is engraved on the lower forehead In the Ming Dynasty, a couplet was engraved on the pillar: "it is a martyr's wife of a loyal minister who has vowed to die for her husband. The next day, Tongyun issues a fenggao; the hero of the true woman sacrificed his life for righteousness, a tribute from he Luan in the Qingzhong of Lingnan." in the second column, a couplet was engraved: "so the general died in exhaustion, but he did not expect that the spring came to his family; if his wife died calmly, she was a heroine indeed.". The decoration of the archway is simple, with drum stones standing in front of and behind the columns. It is the only well preserved chastity archway in Guangzhou.

Historical legend

Beside the ancient tombs of the sages, there are also "tombs of the forty-one sages" in addition to some famous priests of the past dynasties. There is such a mythical legend in this tomb: the story took place in the Tang Dynasty. According to the Islamic law at that time, when worshiping and praying, you must never do anything else, even if you add knives and axes to your body. Once, 40 sages who came to preach were worshiping, and a robber wanted to rob them of their property. The robbers, armed with sharp blades, killed them one by one during their worship. When the 40th one was killed, the robber suddenly regretted and died. When they collected the remains of 40 people, they also buried the robber's body at the side of the tomb. Up to now, there is a Qing Dynasty stele recording this event.

In the 1950s, Guangzhou municipal government had repeatedly allocated funds for the repair and greening of the cemetery. Today, with luxuriant trees, elegant and solemn environment, the cemetery is regarded as a holy land of Islam by Muslims at home and abroad. Every year, a large number of Muslims come to pay homage to it.
