The origin of festivals

Hong Kong is the birthplace of Modern International Dragon Boat Race and recognized by all over the world

The first Hong Kong International Dragon Boat race was held by the Hong Kong Tourism Board in 1976

The International Dragon Boat Federation was established in Hong Kong in 1991 as the international management organization of dragon boat races

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Association (now the Dragon Boat Association of Hong Kong, China) was established in the same year to coordinate Dragon Boat activities in Hong Kong

The scale of "Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival" in 2012 is the largest in the past years. In addition to the long history of "Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Invitational", there is also the first large-scale international sports event "International Dragon Boat Federation World Club Championship" held in Hong Kong, which has become the largest group sports event ever held in Hong Kong.

The Dragon Boat Festival

 

It is a festival in memory of Qu Yuan, a famous official in ancient China. More than 2000 years ago, he drowned himself in the Miluo River in order to admonish the monarch. It is said that the villagers rowed dragon boats on the river to find Qu Yuan's body, beat gongs and drums to scare away the fish, and threw zongzi into the river to prevent fish and shrimp from eating Qu Yuan's body. Since then, dragon boat racing and eating zongzi have become the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival.

Before and after the Dragon Boat Festival, many coastal areas in Hong Kong will carry out traditional customs and hold dragon boat races. This festival full of folk color has developed into an international sport in recent years, which makes the event more enjoyable. A dragon boat can be up to 10 meters long and can carry 20 to 22 athletes. It is engraved with exquisite patterns and has a lifelike dragon head and tail. The dragon boat team, which is composed of fishermen, sports associations or private organizations, has been actively preparing for the event in advance with high morale. In addition, the event itself is noisy and full of festival atmosphere, which will attract a large number of citizens and tourists to join in the fun.
