Xiyingpan

synonym

Xihuan generally refers to xiyingpan

Located in the west of Hong Kong Island, west of Sheung Wan and east of Shek Tong Tsui, Sai Ying Pun is one of the earliest developed areas in Hong Kong. Administratively, xiyingpan belongs to the central and western regions. Also known as the west ring and the Western District of Hong Kong Island, it is also within the "western half of the mountain" referred to by Hong Kong real estate analysts. It belongs to the traditional old area, and the population aging is obvious.

The origin of the name

"Yingpan" in xiyingpan means military camp. There are two legends about the camp: the first is the base of the pirate Zhang baozi, and the second is the camp of the British army.

history

Xiyingpan has a long history. British troops landed on Hong Kong Island on 26 January 1841 at Sai Ying Pun, which is now Shui Keng Kou street. Later, the British developed Victoria City, and its western end became a place where Chinese lived. There were many shops selling seafood and traditional Chinese medicine, which have been developed to this day.

Early street planning of xiyingpan

In 1851, because of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a large number of Chinese refugees poured in. In order to accommodate these refugees, the British Hong Kong government at that time developed the area of xiyingpan. Starting from the west of Queen's road, which was oriented from east to west, it developed to the mountains, and divided the first street, the second street, the third street and the high street (formerly known as the Fourth Street). The East and west of this residential area are respectively bounded by the East Street and the West Street, and the main street (formerly known as Zhongzheng Street) is the central point of this area. As a result, a street planning of "Mu" shape was formed.
