Hangzhou Grand Theater is a large-scale landmark building in Qianjiang New Town, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is located at 39 Xinye Road, Jianggan District, Hangzhou city. It is composed of opera house, concert hall, variable theater, sunken open-air theater and outdoor cultural square.

Hangzhou Grand Theater is designed by Canadian theater designer Carlos Ott. Its overall shape is like a crescent moon. It covers a total area of 100000 square meters, with a total construction area of 55000 square meters and a total cost of 700 million yuan.

In March 2006, Hangzhou Grand Theater was selected as one of the "top ten achievements in building science and technology in China" in 2005.

In the China performing arts Expo in 2019, Hangzhou Grand Theater won the honorary titles of "top 15 vitality of China's theater complex in 2018" and "top 10 vitality of large performance venues in non first tier cities in China in 2018".

Evolution of construction

In July 2001, Hangzhou Grand Theater officially started construction.

In August 2004, Hangzhou Grand Theater was officially completed and put into trial operation.

In July 2015, the first large-scale renovation project of Hangzhou Grand Theater was carried out.

Architectural pattern

opera house

Opera house is the main and core performance place of Hangzhou Grand Theater. It occupies the central position of the whole building complex with "horseshoe" building plane, and has world-class stage facilities and equipment. There are 1600 seats in the opera house, including 1000 seats on the first floor and 600 seats on the second and third floors.

Multifunction Room

The multi-function hall is a small and variable theater, which should be suitable for conference, fashion, drama, exhibition and other multi-function performances. The building area is about 600 square meters, surrounded by a 3-meter-wide rest Gallery, and a total of 400 seats for the audience.

Public hall

The public hall is not only the gathering and distributing place of the people flow and traffic of the opera house, the concert hall and the multi-function hall, but also the landmark space of the Grand Theater. The plane form of the public hall is crescent shaped, which is divided into East and West halls.

Concert Hall

The concert hall of Hangzhou Grand Theater is mainly composed of small and medium-sized concerts and indoor concerts. Its plane is of classical shoe box type, with a net width of 21 meters and a depth of 32 meters. The building area is 612 square meters, with an average floor height of 10.5 meters. The total number of seats in the auditorium is 598, with a total of 21 rows.

Open air Theater

The open-air theater is located in the west of the whole Hangzhou Grand Theater complex. It is embedded in a water area of nearly 6000 square meters with a water depth of 60 cm. It is integrated with the main building of the Grand Theater. The open-air theater imitates the classical architectural style of ancient Rome, with seats around the central stage and pools around the whole open-air theater, just like the reflection of the Grand Theater in the water, which can accommodate 700 people.

Architectural features

Variable Theater

The variable theater breaks through the mode of traditional performance venues, and is designed into a flexible space, equipped with stage mechanical equipment such as electric master stage, electric sub stage, and hidden electric flipped seats. The whole variable theater is basically movable. According to the different needs of performance or conference, it can change a variety of combination forms. Among them, there are five types of basic stage, and the rest of the stage can be manually operated according to the user's needs. The variable theater realizes the change of reverberation time and frequency by means of electroacoustic, and can achieve good acoustic effect and sound quality no matter what type of stage design.

Design features

The plan of Hangzhou Grand Theater adopts rectangular shape, and the ceiling is of four arc-shaped wave shape, so that the sound energy can be effectively reflected to the pool seat and the auditorium of the floor. The opening size of the ear light and surface light can be controlled to avoid excessive absorption of sound energy, so as to increase the effective reflected sound of the walls on both sides of the entrance and the ceiling. By increasing the height difference between the front row and the last row of the pool seat, it is conducive to the line of sight, and can avoid the grazing absorption of sound energy by the audience, so as to improve the straight sound intensity in the back row of the audience.
