Square appearance

"Square appearance" was built in 1759. It's a small European style palace with three bays and marble veneers carved with palindrome pattern. The roof is a double eaves imitating Chinese style, with four slopes and blue glazed tile roofs. There are three upper and three lower rooms, with half ring stone steps on both sides leading to the second floor. The steps of the gate and staircase are made of bronze.

"Fang Wai Pao" is a mosque, where Qianlong's love Princess (Rongfei, also known as Xiangfei) worshiped.

Rong Fei is a Uighur nationality. Because of her family's contribution to the Qing army's pacification of the big, small and Zhuo rebellion, she went to Beijing to receive the title of "Rong Fei". She also went to the palace and was granted the title of "Rong Fei", and died in 1788.

It is said that Rong Fei was favored by Emperor Qianlong because her sweat glands could secrete fragrance and she was very beautiful. In order to win her favor and respect the religious habits of Uighurs who believe in Islam, Hongli later specially transformed Fang's appearance into a place for Rong Fei to worship in the garden. Two round Arabic inscriptions were added to the interior wall. The two inscriptions are translated as follows: "Ottoman loves Allah, Allah loves Ottoman" and "Ali loves Allah, Allah loves Ali". Osman and Ali are one of the four heirs of Muhammad, the founder of the Islamic religion. It is not difficult to know that Fang Waiguan is a witness of national unity. It was more ceremonious for Rong Fei to worship. Qianlong also found four imams to accompany her.

In addition, Qianlong also sent an edict to offer Elaeagnus angustifolia flowers for Rong Fei. In the east of xixilou, she built a line painting for her, and drew the landscape paintings of her hometown Aksu, Xinjiang, which changed with the seasons, in order to understand her homesickness.

There is a western style octagonal pavilion outside the "square appearance" Southwest bridge.

In 1860, when the British and French allied forces burned down the Yuanmingyuan, Fangwaiguan, like most other western buildings, was only burnt down. The wooden structure, marble and tiles of the building were well preserved. Most of the present situation of Fang's appearance is caused by the illegal transportation of stones by warlords and bandits.
