Town God's Temple, Puning

Town God's Temple, Puning, was built in the forty-two year (1563) of Ming Jiajing (Puning). It was four hundred years ago, and it was an ancient building. The City God is one of the most important deities in Chinese religious culture. Most of them are heroes who have made contributions to the local people. They are the deities that Chinese folk and Taoism believe in guarding the city.

Town God's Temple, Puning, located on the northeast side of Hongyang Town, Gucheng, Puning, Guangdong, is located three hundred meters north east of Yadun County, and is adjacent to Wenchang Pavilion. Town God's Temple, Puning, was built in the forty-two year (1563) of Ming Jiajing (Puning). It was four hundred years ago, and it was an ancient building. The City God is one of the most important deities in Chinese religious culture. Most of them are heroes who have made contributions to the local people. Town God's Temple, Puning, is a common Temple owned by over 800 villages in Puning. It is a folk Temple Fair for the villagers in ancient Puning to celebrate the harvest, pray for peace, connect with the countryside and make friends. It is a rare ancient building with great cultural value.

Historical evolution

Town God's Temple, Puning, has been reconstructed and built by two times in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

In the 34th year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, Zhao mianzhou, magistrate of the county, rebuilt the nave and porch.

In the 48th year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi, the county magistrate andingmei rebuilt the back hall, two corridors and six divisions, which became an ancient palace style building with three halls and two patios. It is 27 meters wide from east to west and 60 meters deep from north to south, with a total construction area of 1620 square meters. The front hall is the Sanshan gate, and the left and right sides of the gate are dedicated to the horse officer. Inside the gate are the thousand mile eye and the smooth ear. Zhongting is offering work relief to the Lord of Bofu (commonly known as chenghuanggong). The back hall is divided into three halls, which are dedicated to the lady of the City God, the eighteen Arhats and the thousand handed Avalokitesvara. In the middle of the main hall and the back hall, there is a releasing pool for raising turtles and turtles and planting water cotton trees (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). There is an arch bridge in the middle of the pool, surrounded by white stone railings on both sides. In the plane layout, the temple boldly integrates the garden buildings such as pool and arch bridge into the temple layout. The architectural structure retains the style and local characteristics of Ming Dynasty, and has high historical, artistic and architectural research value. In October 1998, it was listed as the cultural relic protection unit of Puning City.

Protection status

After the founding of the people's Republic of China, Town God's Temple was transformed into a factory building and a school building. Although some of them were rebuilt, the architectural style of Ming and Qing Dynasties was preserved. Since the reform and opening up, the people of Town God's Temple have made great efforts to protect the cultural heritage, to protect the cultural relics, to promote the folk culture, to develop tourism and to promote the ties and friendship between the villagers at home and abroad. Under the direct leadership of the local government, the "Pu Yi Town God's Temple Construction Committee" has been set up, and people from all walks of life have been donated to build and protect this ancient building. It has been renovated one after another to restore the original pattern.
