Yanshan Temple

Originally named Lingyan temple, it is located in Tianyan Village (close to zhonghuyu) at the north foot of Wutai Mountain, South yukou, Fanshi county. Founded in 1158, it was repaired in yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Yanshan Temple faces south in the north, and its plane is irregular rectangle. The main hall of the temple has been destroyed. The existing buildings mainly include three South halls, three East and west auxiliary halls, four other halls, three Zen houses, one Chuihua gate and one bell tower, which are also used as mountain gates. Except for the South Hall, the rest are from the late Qing Dynasty to the folk years. The green pines in the temple are gloomy, and the ancient palace is majestic and serene. It looks like a bright pearl inlaid in the mountains.

The South Hall is Manjusri hall, with five rooms wide, six rafters deep, and a single eaves resting on the top of the mountain. In the hall, there are painted sculptures of the Jin Dynasty, such as shuiyueguanyin, waishi, Tianwang and Manjusri. The water moon Guanyin has a plump face, looks just like it, and her clothes are flowing like the wind.

Yanshan temple, surrounded by Jin Dynasty Murals, has a total area of about 90 square meters. It was completed in the seventh year of Jin Dading (1167 AD) and painted by Wang Kui, the court painter of Jin Dynasty. The contents of the murals are all based on the stories of Buddhist scriptures.

The west wall depicts the life story of Sakyamuni; the east wall depicts the story of the health preserving Prince cutting flesh to honor his parents; the north wall depicts the story of a group of pagoda temples and 500 merchants who were killed on the sea and the Luocha women rescuing them; the south wall depicts the figures of pavilions and supporting people, showing the artistic images of emperors and generals, imperial concubines and talented women, small-scale farmers and businessmen, court pavilions, mills and wine shops Banners, chariots, etc. were all the forms of the Northern Song Dynasty. Many of them are the epitome of social life in song and Jin Dynasties.

It is a precious material for studying the history, society, religion, architecture and fine arts of song and Jin Dynasties. It can be called "double wall" of Shanxi murals with Yongle Palace murals.
