Located in the area under the jurisdiction of Wujiang Economic and Technological Development Zone (Tongli town), on the west side of the Grand Canal, it is the only existing ancient path of the Jiangnan canal. It is an outstanding example of ancient water conservancy projects in China. It was built by Wang Zhongshu, the governor of Suzhou in the Tang Dynasty. The existing path was rebuilt from 1341 to 1368, mainly composed of the path itself, Sanshan bridge and nanqixing bridge. In 2006, as an integral part of the Grand Canal, the ancient Silk Road was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit.
