It was first built in the Sui Dynasty when Emperor Wen was used to worship Buddhist relics and was initially named Daxing temple in Jingzhou. In 1964, 14 national treasures of Buddha bone relic were found in the underground palace of the site, which was 23 years earlier than that of Famen Temple in Fufeng, Shaanxi Province. Now the site has a museum of Dayun temple.
