In September of 1866, Yan tingpei of Qingzhou Prefecture and he Yufu of Yidu County reported that they had captured bandits Ji Zonghua and Ji Zhaodong, and offered to worship Zhang Qi of Huangya mountain (i.e. Zhang Jizhong) as their teacher. Now many people have gathered in the mountain and ordered them to go to Qingzhou to hook up bandits. The vassal Ding Baozhen sent Zhang Shaoling, the son of Zhang Jizhong, to the mountain to persuade his father to surrender. Zhang Jizhong said to his son, "what's wrong with my lecturing? If I want to be a matchmaker, I will be a matchmaker! The corrupt officials wanted to make a great prison and make contributions. If I go there, why don't I ask for a week's exercise? That is, I'm lucky to find out that the public is willing to be honest and down-to-earth and beg to live? If you are afraid, you can go there by yourself. " Zhang Shaoling knelt down to invite him. Zhang Jizhong said angrily, "Jizhong will never walk in the court in this life. If he wants to go out of the court, he will die! Jizhong is also a husband. It's OK to die by sword, but it's impossible to die by shackles. Jizhong died for his studies. What can he do? "

After that, Yan Jingming led more than ten thousand troops to the city and cut off their roads, which made it difficult for them to drink water. Wu Zaixun, a former Jinan magistrate and a disciple of Zhang Jizhong's school, left Huangya before the incident and became a lobbyist for Yan Jingming to persuade him to surrender. Zhang Jizhong was not swayed by the threat and persuasion of soldiers.

Finally, more than ten thousand people (including the old, the weak, the women and the children) in Huangya, under the leadership of Zhang Jizhong, resolutely fought back. Because of the great disparity between the masses, the struggle suffered a tragic defeat. Most of the people led by Zhang Jizhong set themselves on fire in the "sage hall".
