Geological wonders formed by volcanic eruption
Shitiaoshan
Shitiaoshan is one of the seven major volcanic rock pillar groups in China, which was formed by magma from submarine volcano about 230-67 million years ago.
Shitiaoshan, located in Taipusi Banner, Inner Mongolia, is one of the seven major volcanic rock pillars in China. Shitiaoshan was formed about 230 million years ago on the bottom of the ocean. Because of the high latitude and the water cooling of the sea, the volcanic lava was rapidly cooled by the sea water, forming columnar joints (the shape of shitiaoshan), which was reported in detail in the 8th issue of National Geographic magazine of China in 2009.
