Jinling East Road Arcade

Jinling East Road arcade is located at the east end of the former French concession. It is a unique street in Shanghai and the only large-scale arcade street in the center of Shanghai. The buildings on both sides of Jinling East Road arcade belong to the characteristic landscape of Lingnan.

Jinling East Road, built in 1860, is the first road built in the French concession. Because the French Consulate is located at the east end of the road, it is called "consulate road" in French and translated into "residence road" in Chinese. In 1865, Gongguan road was built westward to laobeimen Street (today's Henan South Road). In 1865, it was built by fire. The road was built westward to Tibet south road. At the same time, the whole road began to use gas lamps for night lighting. At the beginning of the 20th century, under the unified planning of the Public Security Bureau, the storefront houses on both sides of the road were mostly built with arcade style, with wind and rain proof corridors, which was unique in Shanghai, which was quite similar to Guangzhou, a southern city in the subtropical zone. It was changed to its current name in December 1945. But until the founding of the people's Republic of China, ordinary citizens used to call it "Fa Da Lu". In those days, gongguanma road was the political and economic center of the French concession. Later, due to the expansion of the French concession, Jinling East Road became the second commercial street in the French concession.
