Behind the scenes production

Director Dai Sijie has been preparing for the film for three years. Due to the sensitive theme, it has not become a co production of China and France. The director had to turn to Vietnam with a similar background. Dai Sijie had already gone to Vietnam to choose the location in 2003, but because of SARS, he had to postpone. After SARS, he couldn't find suitable actresses with the same temperament and schedule. From Maggie Cheung, Liu Ruoying to Zhou Xun, he finally locked in the mainland actress Li Xiaoran three years later, and the other heroine was Mirani jepanomi, a Chinese French hybrid.
