Karamay Lake wetland, located in Karamay City, Xinjiang, is one of the few shallow lakes with vegetation in the desert area of Northwest China.

Karamay Lake wetland is located at 45 ° 35 ′ n, 85 ° 00 ′ e, Xinjiang, near Karamay City. It covers an area of 100 hectares. The altitude is about 300 meters. It is composed of a shallow brackish lake and its surrounding reed beach, mud beach and salt marsh formed by the overflow water from the reservoir built to supply water to the well tower of Karamay Oilfield. The saltwater lake is permanent, but the water level is easy to fluctuate and freezes from November to March.

Biological resources

The main vegetation is Phragmites australis, rare trees and shrubs. There are some marsh willows on the mudflat. In the desert area with sparse vegetation, there are dry deep valleys, outcrop rocks, stone sand plains and salt marshes.

The saltwater lakes and marshes support a rich diversity of breeding birds. The birds observed in a brief survey in June 1986 included black necked, red mallard, Yunshi spotted duck (several pairs are considered breeding birds), red billed diving duck (30 pairs), white bone top, black winged long feet, golden orbit, ring neck, red feet, big reed warbler, paddy reed warbler and Wenxu finch. This is the first record of this endangered species in China. The wetland may also be an important post for migratory waterfowl. Many species of birds and terns were observed in 1986, and rhinoswans were reported.

Tourism characteristics

The water of Karamay river is introduced from the erjis River 400 kilometers away, because the water resources here are quite scarce. On August 8, 2000, the water diversion project was completed, which is the only man-made city crossing river built in the Gobi desert in China. It is this huge water diversion project that leads to Karamay, which is now "south of the Great Wall". It has the most beautiful night view in the west, and is also a national 4A scenic spot. Karamay river is a river of resources to beautify the environment of Karamay City, and it is also the most important tourism landscape in the city. In particular, the green corridor and 20 bridges of different sizes and shapes along the river give people the beauty of beautiful scenery and changeable scenery, and become a beautiful scenic line of Karamay city. The wide green belt on both sides of Karamay river runs through the whole Karamay garden.
