Wuxi Zoo

Wuxi zoo is located at the south foot of Xishan Mountain in Wuxi City, in Wuxi Xihui park. It was built in 1956. In 2010, it moved to No. 99 qianrong road and opened for children's day. On that day, the new zoo received more than 15000 visitors.

In February 2020, in order to express our gratitude to the medical staff, we will implement the policy of free admission to the national medical workers from the date of the restoration of the park to December 31, 2020.

Scale of old garden

There are a large proportion of bird exhibitions in the park, including songbirds, pheasants, wading birds and other exhibition areas, with bird rooms and Raptor cages interspersed in the middle. In the pheasant exhibition area with peacock house as the center, the cages present various geometric figures, which are scattered in different heights with the change of terrain. The cage is decorated with flowers, trees and humorous sketches, presenting a beautiful natural ecological environment. There are blue peacocks and green peacocks. There are many kinds of parrots, some of which are very valuable.

There are lakes in the waterfowl exhibition area, where mandarin ducks and swans are scattered.

There are hippopotamus hall, seal pool and lion and tiger hall in the mammal area. In the hippopotamus hall, the hippopotamus, known as the second largest animal on land, is raised.

In the clear seal pool, you can see the seal with black back and flower belly, which is like a small and exquisite submarine, shuttling back and forth in the pool, very lively.

After the construction of the lion and tiger Museum, the number of fierce African lions and precious Amur tigers on display has increased, as well as sika deer, zebra, camel, elk and other mammals on display.

History of old garden

In 1951, a small zoo was built in the city park. Covering an area of about 50 square meters, there are nearly 20 species of leopards, bears, deer, camels, small animals and birds. At that time, the zoo was relatively early in the whole province. The ticket price at that time was 2 cents. It's open five and a half days a week. In 1953, there were 130000 visitors.

In 1955, the municipal government approved the construction of a medium-sized zoo in the southern foot of Xishan, covering an area of 30 mu. At that time, there were 7 bird houses, 5 small animal houses, 2 deer pens, 1 camel pen, 1 bear pen, 1 monkey mountain, 1 waterfowl cage and 1 beast cage.

On the new year's day of 1956, Wuxi zoo was officially completed and opened. Then, two lion and tiger houses were built, and one Amur tiger was introduced from Harbin. In May of the same year, the small zoo in the city was abolished, and all animals were returned to Xishan Zoo (Wuxi Zoo). In that year, it received 610000 visitors. After several times of expansion and reconstruction, the zoo added some rare species at home and abroad, such as spotted hyena, European brown bear, red panda, Turkey, white tiger, zebra and giant panda. Today, Wuxi zoo in Xihui Park covers an area of more than 60 mu, double the area when it was just built, and there are more than 850 species of rare animals.

The most special: "three legged" tiger

In 1959, a female lion in the zoo had just given birth. A "neighbor" female tiger put a forelimb over the barbed wire fence to amuse the lion cub, which angered the female lion. As a result, her forelimb was bitten and fractured. After diagnosis, she had to amputate it. After amputation, the female tiger has become a distinctive "three legged" tiger. Many people go to the zoo to see the "disabled" female tiger.

The most festive: "goodbye, bear"

When it comes to "goodbye bear", Wuxi people all know that it is a bear, but since when has the bear become "goodbye bear"? Why do you call a bear that way? It turns out that the previous bear ring was made into a pit with a relatively low terrain, and tourists gathered around it to see the bears. When tourists throw food to bears, they will stand up to receive food, and their two forelimbs will unconsciously bow to each other. But in Wuxi's old saying, Zuoyi has the saying of "Bye Bye", so people often use food to call bear "Bye Bye", which has won a good reputation. In order to be pleasant to listen to, Wuxi people added the word "ah" before the bear, and "ah bear, goodbye" was opened like this. As for when to begin to call it that, there is no way to study.

The most interesting: "the expert of runaway"

The beast escaped from the cage, but it was a big oversight of the zoo management. Similar "incidents" have occurred in Wuxi zoo. For example, there have been two times when lions have escaped from their cages. One of his most impressive events happened in 1966. At that time, Wuxi had begun to engage in political movements to fight the real power faction. The keeper forgot to close the door of the lion's cage, causing a male lion to run out. Fortunately, the lion came out and walked around the other cage. It turned out that there was a female lion living in another lion cage. The lioness captured all the attention of the male. The lion came out of the cage and was found by tourists. The tourist was a family member of a garden worker, and he went to the zoo with his child in his arms that day. She often went to the zoo and found that the lion was not in the cage. She realized the seriousness of the situation and immediately asked someone to report it. The zoo decided that the monitor of the breeding class would lure the lion into the cage. Because the lion is about to pounce on the monitor. It's a very dangerous job. The monitor climbed to the top of the cage. Sure enough, the lion jumped at the monitor and entered the cage. Just across the wall from the lion cage is a private house. The monitor borrowed a clothes pole from the owner and closed the lion cage with it.

In the early days of Wuxi zoo's opening, brown bears also ran out n times. At that time, the facilities of the zoo were relatively simple, and it was not particularly difficult for brown bears to get out of the bear pen. Brown bear is more afraid of people and dare not run out when there are many people. It will choose to sneak out when there are few people to "walk". After each discovery, the brown bear will be driven back to the bear pen in time. As a result, there has never been a brown bear injury accident. Since the opening of the zoo, there has never been a serious injury by a beast.

The monkey's trip was entirely accidental. Once, the branch of a tree above the monkey mountain was too long and reached into the monkey mountain. Two clever monkeys climbed out along the branch. At that time, the monkeys fled and alerted all the people in the zoo. 110 also came out to help catch the monkeys. It's a pity that the monkey's skill is too quick. He turned around and ran up the mountain, but he hasn't found it yet. I'm afraid they have already bred in a certain paradise, called Wang Jianqun!

Longevity: European brown bear

People have birthdays, and so do zoos. In Wuxi zoo, a European brown bear introduced in the 1970s can be regarded as an old animal. It has lived for more than 20 years and witnessed many historical moments in Wuxi zoo. At the same time, it is also a heroic mother. During her stay in Wuxi zoo, she had more than 20 babies. It's watching a lot of children grow up in the sixties and seventies!

Most pitiful: hundred bird garden collapses

Talking about bainiayuan, it's a special feature of Wuxi zoo. By 1995, bainiao garden had an area of more than 20000 square meters, with more than 40 species of rare birds. Unfortunately, in January 1996, a heavy snow broke down the roof of the hundred birds garden, and all that could fly were gone, leaving only some peacocks, cranes and other birds at home. Later, although some citizens captured the rare birds that had escaped and returned them to the zoo, most of them did not come back. However, in Huishan area, we can still see the descendants of many birds, such as grey magpie and myna, who escaped at the beginning. When the spring flowers bloom, the birds and their descendants who once fled into the mountains fly and shuttle in the mountains, adding a lot of vitality.
