Shimen Great Buddha Temple

Shimen Dafo temple, the largest Buddha on the Yangtze River, is located in Shimen Town, Jiangjin city, Chongqing, 50 kilometers away from Jiangjin city.

Shimen Dafo temple, on August 16, 1956, was the first batch of provincial key cultural relics protection units announced by the former Sichuan Provincial People's government. After Chongqing Municipality was directly under the central government, it was rated as the municipal key cultural relics protection units.

Historical evolution

The Great Buddha Temple was rebuilt in Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty.

In 1869, the Great Buddha Temple was rebuilt.

In the early years of the Republic of China (1912), the Great Buddha Temple was repaired again.

The scale

The total construction area of Dafosi temple is 720 square meters. East and West have a stone curved path, from the cliff to the river and connected with the temple.

architectural style

Inside the Great Buddha Temple, there is a triad layout, with wing rooms on the left and right, and the main hall in the middle, which is divided into Songzi hall, Guanyin hall and Leishen hall in turn. The stone statue in the temple is a Guanyin statue with a height of 13.5 meters.

The main hall of Shimen great Buddhist temple has seven eaves, a mountain style roof, glazed tile roof, a vase in the middle, a kiss in the wings and corners, and a beam type beam frame.

It wears a crown with a smiling arhat in it. The statue is dressed in a ribbon of heaven's clothing, painted with gold, with tassels on its chest, Falun hanging on its abdomen, sitting lazily on the lotus, slightly lifting its left foot and stepping on the lotus leaf, placing its left hand on its left knee, naturally drooping its right hand, with a serene and graceful look, revealing freedom and freedom. The charm is great and lifelike. This is the largest statue of Avalokitesvara in China. It ranks the ninth among the Buddhist statues in China.

Cliff statues

Located 100 meters east of Baiping Village (formerly Liangting Village), Shimen Town, Jiangjin city, Chongqing City, the cliff statue of Shimen Dafo temple is 500 meters west of Chengdu Chongqing railway station, 45 kilometers east of Jiangjin city and 75 kilometers away from Chongqing city. You can get there by Shimen bus at Jiangjin xiaoguanshan bus station.

Self driving tourists from Chongqing can go down Shuangfu Road, through degan, Youxi, Wushi and directly to Shimen. Facing the south, facing the Yangtze River in the front and the cliff in the back.

In the second legend, considering the hardship of pilgrims' Pilgrimage, the Buddha let the mountain spring seeping from the stone wall behind the Buddha statue flow into the well at the bottom of the Buddha all the year round. People who drink this water can keep safe, bring good luck and eliminate diseases and disasters.

The third legend is the most magical. It is said that the Great Buddha is very effective, so the construction of the Great Buddha is different from that of other Buddhas. The Buddha's body is filled with hardware and grain, which can eat fireworks and relieve people's feelings.

Records in Local Records

"Jiangjin County annals" records that "the Great Buddha Temple, a hundred miles away from the city, near the river side of Shimen field, is about ten feet high on the ancient carved Giant Buddha hand rock. There is a stone on the left like a pure bottle, and on the right like a parrot. The temple is built according to the rock. It is more than ten feet high and has seven floors."
