Sacred Heart Cathedral

The Cathedral of the sacred heart of Jesus is located in Shenyang, China. Located at No. 40, Nanlejiao Road, Shenhe District, Shenyang City, it is also called xiaonantian main church. Now the square has been built in front of the church.

Historical development

In 1861, French priest Fang ruowang (1805-1878) came to Shenyang from Yingkou to preach. The construction of the church began in 1875 and was completed in 1878, with a nursery and a school.

On July 2, 1900, in the gengzi rebellion, the church was burned down, and more than 100 men and women, including a foreign priest, were burned to death.

The church was rebuilt with Boxer Indemnity in 1909 and completed in 1912. French design by Henry Leung. The church faces south. The twin towers are 40 meters high and 54 meters deep. They are built with blue bricks. The central part of the front is the big rose window. This is a pure Gothic cathedral.

Before 1949, the Cathedral of the sacred heart of Jesus in Nanguan was the highest building in Shenyang. In 1988, it was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Liaoning Province.

history

Franciscan priest Luca initiated the construction of this church. In 1929, Archbishop Agra laid the foundation for it, and in 1930, it began to be built. Sir Anthony de Mello donated the marble main altar of the church, and archbishop Agra presented bells and vestments. The project was funded by British colonial officials.

Introduction to architecture

The church was designed by British architect Henry Medd in Italian style. The facade is designed with round towers and white columns, and each entrance is provided with a porch. The interior is a high curved roof.
