King Shun Temple

The famous King Shun temple in Yuezhong is located in shangwangtan Town, Shunwang mountain, on the North Bank of Xiaoshunjiang River, Jijiang Town, Shaoxing County, about 43 kilometers away from Shaoxing City. It is said that King Shun had been hunting here to avoid the chaos of his wife and uncle Dan Zhu. There is a saying in historical records: "Shun, Shangyu people. Yao Qiu was born to shun thirty miles away from Yu. " Shangyu is a neighboring county of Shaoxing. It is said that Yushun used to work and play here, so there are many place names related to it, such as Shunwang mountain, Xiaoshunjiang and so on. In this way, it is not surprising that a temple of King Shun was built here to commemorate the ancient emperor. It is difficult to determine the date when the temple of King Shun was first built. According to Jiatai Kuaiji annals of the Southern Song Dynasty, "Shun temple is 100 Li southeast of the county. "Shuyizhi" says: "there are Yushun's hunting platform in Kuaiji mountain, and the lower mausoleum temple." It can be seen that as early as the Six Dynasties, there was a mausoleum of Shun. The temple of King Shun, as you can see now, was rebuilt in the Xianfeng Period of the Qing Dynasty (1851-1861) and rebuilt in the first year of tongzhi (1862). King Shun temple stands on the top of the mountain, overlooking Shunjiang River (now Shuangjiang River) in front and facing the wilderness in the back. It is a place with beautiful environment. From the foot of Shunwang mountain, there is a stone platform about several feet wide on the top of the mountain. Standing here and looking down from the south, you can see the small Shunjiang river rippling back like a belt. In the distance, there are green mountains and pleasant scenery. The Cinnamomum camphora tree in front of King Shun's temple needs a few people to embrace it. Although it has gone through a hundred years, it is still flourishing. Through this huge camphor tree, we can see the long history of King Shun temple. The Mountain Gate of King Shun Temple faces southeast, and stone carvings are embedded on the west wall. They are carved out of a whole stone slab. They are covered with plaques on all sides. In the middle of them is a relief. You can see four old men. They are vivid in the picture. They are smiling between the eyebrows. The beams and columns outside the gate are full of vivid woodcut reliefs, including fish, birds, poultry and animals. They are only a few inches in size, but they are all lifelike in shape.
