Haergai town is located in the south of Gangcha County, 27 kilometers away from the county government. The population is 9000, mainly Tibetan, accounting for 81% of the total population. It covers an area of 2000 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over gonggongma, yaxiuma, huancangxiuma, Guoluo zangxiuma, qiecha, Chala and Tangqu Village (animal husbandry) committees.

In 1958, khargai district was established, which was changed into khargai commune in the same year, khargai Township in 1962, khargai commune in 1969, and khargai Township in 1984. In 2004, Gangcha County Division Adjustment: the abolition of halgai Township, the establishment of hot water town. In August 2006, hot water town was renamed as khargai town.
