Dongwangyang fort is located at the top of Dongwangyang mountain (Songshan). It is the highest point of Macao Peninsula. It was built between 1637 and 1638, with sentry house, powder magazine, tower and other buildings.
Dongwangyang fort was originally mainly used for defense against foreign invasion and as an observation station. It has always been listed as a military restricted area. Outsiders are not allowed to enter without permission. Only on August 5 and the ninth Double Ninth Festival of the ninth lunar month are it open to the public. In 1976, the Portuguese army withdrew from Macao, and the fort was opened as a tourist spot, which still remains intact. On the fort there is the Church of Notre Dame and the Oriental lighthouse.
