The college has a deep historical origin with Lingnan University, which was founded more than 120 years ago. In 1888, American friends founded Gezhi College (the predecessor of Lingnan University) in Guangzhou. In 1926, the name of the college was changed to private Lingnan University. In 1927, Lingnan University was run by the Chinese, and Dr. Zhong Rongguang was the first Chinese president. In 1952, in the process of the national adjustment of colleges and departments, the relevant departments of Lingnan University were merged into Sun Yat sen University and other institutions of higher learning.
