Pokfulan Country Park

Pokfulam Country Park (designated on September 21, 1979), covering 270 hectares, is a country park located in the west of Hong Kong Island, adjacent to Pokfulam. Within the park is Pokfulam reservoir, the first reservoir in Hong Kong. The park covers the central and Western District and the Southern District, and is surrounded by Laqi mountain. It is worth mentioning that because the peak is an urbanized residential area and a tourist attraction, the area around the peak is not a country park. Therefore, the park is divided into two parts, North and south. In addition to Shuitang and lashishan, the country park also includes Xishan Mountain and Qili mountain, and the first to second sections of Hong Kong Island Drive shuttle between them. Pokfulam special area is also located in Pokfulam country park.

Pokfulam country park is located in the west of Hong Kong Island

It is adjacent to Pok Fu Lam (north to Mt. Mok sing Ling and mid levels, South to Aberdeen, across central and western districts and southern districts. It is one of the suburban parts of Hong Kong Island). The park is surrounded by the LAK Chi Shan and Pok Fu Lam reservoir, and relies on the western high mountains and Killy hill.

Construction history

On February 29, 1860, S.B. rawling, a clerk in the Royal Engineering Department, proposed to take advantage of the situation of Pokfulam Valley and build a dam to intercept the rainwater from Pokfulam Valley for drinking. The Pokfulam reservoir was finally completed in 1863 and became the first reservoir in Hong Kong. On September 21, 1979, Pokfulam country park was expanded on the basis of Pokfulam reservoir. It covers an area of 270 hectares and consists of land surrounding Pokfulam reservoir.

Introduction to the park

Surrounded by Taiping mountain, the park has a pleasant scenery. At the same time, it is the starting point of the first section of Hong Kong Island trail. You can have a panoramic view of the Victoria Harbour by walking along Xiali road. Therefore, on holidays, there is an endless stream of people coming to visit the mountain top along Lugi road and Xiali road.

From the mountain path to the green pofulin Valley, you can enjoy the beautiful pofulin pond. In the Southern District of Hong Kong Island, the Pokfulam reservoir and the green trees form a beautiful scenery of lakes and mountains. A leisurely stroll has a unique flavor. Many morning athletes go to the park every morning for fresh air, jogging, stretching or chatting. Therefore, Pokfulam country park can be regarded as the back garden in the eyes of many people in the district.

Park ecology

Botany

Since the establishment of pofulin country park, the agriculture, fisheries and Conservation Department has been planting a large number of trees in the park. The main tree species are slash pine (Pinus elliottii), Acacia formosana, red gum wood and so on; the primary tree species are big head tea and Machilus chekiangensis. In 1999, the biodiversity programme was launched in the park, with the planting of Shanwu, Shuinan, Schima superba (Schima superba), Castanopsis fissa, Lingnan bamboo (xanthocarpus), coating, rag leaf (bagasse leaf) and Ficus microcarpa.

The common birds in the park are black eared Kite (Sparrow), white Bulbul, red eared Bulbul, sparrow, red billed Blue Magpie, Magpie Robin, great tit, kingfisher, black throated noise, thrush, cuckoo, brown winged cuckoo (hairy chicken), pearl necked turtledove, etc. There are also many mammals in the area, such as red bellied squirrels, porcupines, weasel badgers, chinchillas, civets, civets, leopards and muntjacs.

Park attractions

The 50 km Hong Kong Island trail is divided into eight sections. The first and second sections of the trail are located within the Pok Fu Lam Country Park. The first section of Hong Kong Island drive is 7 km long and takes about two hours from the peak cable car terminus to Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road via Luk Kee road and the western section of Harley road. Because the road is gentle and wide, it is the most suitable for a family to travel with, so it is a popular route for holiday visitors to the top of the mountain.

Walking to the middle of Luigi Road, the heart of Hong Kong Island is just under your feet. You can also see the harbour scenery on both sides of Victoria Harbour. Spring fog, stepping into the fog, is another scene. There is a broad grassy slope at the end of xialidao. It has a broad view, overlooking the southwest of Hong Kong Island such as Lamma Island. It is also a good place to watch the sunset.

In the Northern Piedmont section of pofulin reservoir, part of it overlaps with Jiale path. Walking in the forest planting area is quite enjoyable.

The second section of Hong Kong Island drive, from Pokfulam Reservoir Road southbound to Baylor Road, is 4.5 km long and takes about an hour and a half. This section is located in the forest planting area of Pok Fu Lam Country Park. Along the way, it passes through Pok Fu Lam reservoir and Chi Ma path, and walks slowly southward along the road beside the water diversion channel at the south foot of Qili West. Soon, you can see the views of Aberdeen, Yazhou and other southern areas of Hong Kong Island. The second section ends at Bailu road in Aberdeen.

Park facilities

Pokfulan country park is well-equipped, including pavilions, toilets, viewing platforms, fitness facilities, outing venues and map billboards. In the northwest of pofulin reservoir, there is pofulin Jiale path, which is located in pofulin reservoir area with special scientific value. There are many kinds of plants and birds in the area. It is spectacular to see the scenery of Lamma Island in the setting sun.

The best of Parks

The 2.2 km Pokfulam local tree study trail is the first tree study trail in Hong Kong to introduce local plant species. It takes about 45 minutes to complete. The study trail stretches from lugee road beside the peak Plaza, overlooking the city center of Hong Kong Island and the excellent scenery on both sides of Victoria Harbour. While enjoying the nature, you can also enjoy the magnificent scenery of this Asian international metropolis, and feel the unique side of the bustling city and nature. Along the way, you can enjoy the plants such as PU Shu, Li zhangchai (yajiaomu), feipingpo, baicatalpa, baiguimu, Thoreau, shanduying, shanyougan, Luofu persimmon, banyan, Shanwu, camphor, Pangao tree, short order runnan, Datou tea, etc.

On the other hand, Lufeng nature trail extends the study trail to Xiali Road, returns to Lufeng gorge, and reaches the beautiful pofulin reservoir along pofulin Reservoir Road. There are 21 signboards along the way to introduce the origin of the names of "Taiping mountain" and "furnace peak", the rain and fog, plants, insects, topography and geology, birds, pofulin reservoir and pofulin village with a long history.

Pokfulan country park is well connected with many public transport routes

Pok Fu Lam local tree study Trail - take bus No. 15 at central (exchange Plaza), bus No. 515 at North Point pier, or minibus No. 1 at Central MTR Hong Kong station to and from the peak (Lufeng gorge).

Take bus No.15, 515 and minibus No.1 to the top of the mountain. Take bus No.4, 7, 90B, 91 and 94 to central or bus No.40 to Admiralty on the return trip to Pokfulam reservoir.

The first and second sections of Hong Kong Island drive can take bus No.15, 515 and minibus No.1 to reach the peak; return to Bailu Road, Aberdeen, take bus No.7, 37B, 38, 42, 70, 71, 90B, 91, 94, 107, 970, 973 to central, North Point, Kowloon Bay, Suu UK, Tsim Sha Tsui, etc.
