Longyangxia reservoir is located in Longyang gorge at the junction of Gonghe County and Guinan County in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The installed capacity of the power station is 1.28 million kilowatts. The designed water level of the reservoir is 2600 meters. The total storage capacity is 24.7 billion cubic meters and the regulating storage capacity is 19.4 billion cubic meters. It is a large-scale comprehensive utilization project with many years of regulating performance.

Longyang Gorge is located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River in Gonghe County, Qinghai Province. It is the first gorge of the Longyang Gorge Reservoir after the Yellow River flows through Qinghai prairie. It is 1684 km from the birthplace of the Yellow River and 3376 km from the estuary of the Yellow River. It is the first large-scale cascade hydropower station in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, known as the "dragon head" hydropower station of the Yellow River.

Longyang Gorge is 40 kilometers long, and the Yellow River passes through it. The valley is 9 kilometers wide. On both sides of the valley, there are steep and rugged Chana mountains on one side, continuous wilderness on the other, and a wide, flat, fertile and plump basin in the middle, making the whole Gorge a huge natural reservoir area.

When we arrived near the gorge, the cliff suddenly rose abruptly. The distance between the two banks was only more than 30 meters, and the height of the bank was more than 150 meters. This is a unique place for the construction of hydropower stations. The maximum dam height of Longyangxia hydropower station is 178 meters, which is the first dam in China and Asia.

The width of the dam bottom is 80 meters, the width of the dam crest is 15 meters, the length of the main dam is 396 meters, and the height of both sides of the dam is 1140 meters. It can not only stop the annual flow of 130000 square kilometers in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, but also form the largest artificial reservoir on the Yellow River with an area of 380 square kilometers and a total reservoir density of 24 billion cubic meters.

Natural scenery

Longyangxia artificial reservoir has become a beautiful tourist attraction. The dam locks the Yellow River, and Gaoxia leaves Pinghu. With rippling blue waves, lake light and mountain shadow, taking a cruise around the lake, the sky is green and the tourists feel relaxed and happy. Then they suddenly realize that the water of the Yellow River is "clear" here. On November 19, 2005, the water level of Longyangxia Reservoir reached 2597.62 meters, the water storage capacity reached 23.8 billion cubic meters, the difference from the normal water level was only 2.38 meters, and the difference from the designed storage capacity was 900 million cubic meters. The water level and storage capacity reached the highest point in history since the power station impounded in 1986.

Since the impoundment in October 1986, the average annual water inflow is 17.5 billion cubic meters due to continuous years of low water, which is only 87% of the average water inflow of the hydrological series at the dam site. As a result, the Longyangxia reservoir power station has been in low water level operation for a long time after its completion, and the actual annual power generation is far from the design value.

Since the flood season in 2005, the rainfall in the upper reaches of the Yellow River has continued to increase, especially in July and September 2005. The inflow of Longyangxia Reservoir gradually rises, and the water level rises steadily, reaching a new high every day. According to the inflow in 2005, it is estimated that the annual inflow will reach 25 billion cubic meters. This indicates that the Longyangxia reservoir will enter the normal operation stage, which will provide reliable guarantee for the power consumption of the Northwest Power Grid and the water consumption along the line.
