Bronze statue of Queen Victoria
The park is named Victoria Park because it is related to the bronze statue of Queen Victoria.
There was a bronze statue of Queen Victoria in the Statue Square of central district. When the Japanese army occupied Hong Kong, the bronze statue on the square was removed and transported to Japan for war booty. At the end of World War II, when the Japanese army surrendered unconditionally, the British Hong Kong government immediately informed the Allied headquarters to retrieve the statue of Queen Victoria from Japan. However, the bronze statue was in a state of disrepair, and it took many years for experts to repair it. The Queen's "throne" in the square was also destroyed and could not be rebuilt. So we had to find a new site to put Queen Victoria as a new park and named the park "Victoria Park".
In the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), it can be said that it was a famous era of British material progress and political stability, and it steadily moved towards a new page of democracy and freedom. In 1842, Hong Kong was ceded to the British because of the Opium War. At that time, Queen Victoria was in power, and she opened up Hong Kong as a commercial port. The harbour of Hong Kong is also known as Victoria Harbour.
The establishment of the Queen's image
In the early days of Hong Kong's opening, the first area to be developed was the Central District of Hong Kong (formerly known as Victoria City). In 1897, most of the reclamation works in central district were completed. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne. According to the Western custom, the 60th anniversary is called the diamond jubilee. Since Hong Kong is named Victoria City in the name of the queen, the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria must be celebrated. In order to show allegiance to the queen, the statue of the queen was specially built and placed on the newly reclaimed land. Later, the site of the statue was called the Statue Square, which was actually the Statue Square.
Queen captured
The statue of the queen was placed on the square until December 25, 1941, when the Japanese army occupied Hong Kong and Hong Kong became a colony of the Japanese Imperial Army. At that time, Japanese governor Ryunosuke Kitagawa, who was sent to Hong Kong, thought that if the colors left by Britain in Hong Kong were completely cleaned, the "very dazzling" bronze statue of the queen must be removed. At that time, the bronze statue was on a "throne" carved in fine stone. After the bronze statue was removed, the throne was empty and not beautiful. Therefore, he came up with a fantastic idea
"I put my name on the throne and wrote a" edict "in person. I set the stone on the original position of the bronze statue of the queen, and the" throne "of the statue of the queen became the" edict "throne of Ryunosuke. 」
Looking for the queen
In 1945, when Japan surrendered unconditionally, the British Hong Kong government immediately informed the Allied headquarters to ask for the statue of Queen Victoria from Japan. The statue of Queen Victoria was placed in a warehouse in Tokyo, inlaid on a huge stone pedestal. When it was unloaded, it was chiseled and needs to be restored by experts. Originally, this bronze statue could be put back into Queen's Statue Square, but because the stone "throne" on the original site is engraved with Yoshiyuki, it has been destroyed by angry citizens after the surrender of Japan and can not be rebuilt. Therefore, it is most suitable to set up the statue of Queen Victoria in the new park and name the park "Victoria Park". The bronze statue has been standing in the middle of the main road at the entrance of Victoria Park. It has experienced the wind and frost of the times, and has been splashed with red oil.
